The Astai are an carnivorous species originating from the planet Enthor. Their distinctive exoskeleton is a result of their development on a world that has little radiation shielding. The exoskeleton taking the brunt of the radiation. They are built for speed and early on in their development survived as predators hunting prey. Most Astai look similar to aliens, often leaving other races with a difficult time telling whether a specific Astai is male or female. A hindrance that led to a genderless pronouns being used by most other races, and a lot of awkward moments.

The Astai were, in ancient history, a predatory species. They had a very tribal culture with polytheistic religions and they were very decentralised and focused on their individual tribes. However technology allowed them to settle down into cities. This caused profound changes in their culture and in the way their society operated. Leading to the development a diverse range of cultures. A long history of both war and peace ensued, eventually leading to the Astai Republic gaining control over all of Enthor.

The average life expectancy of an Astai living in the Astai Republic is around 120. Their physical prowess can be compared to humans, where Astai martial arts generally focus on speed over strength.
