ECCE is a Large Planet in the Hub System and home to the primary settlement of the IO, who refer to it as 10.
Description
The planet can be roughly subdivided into three temperature regions, the poles, temperate rings and equator, and features two large oceans which together cover some twenty percent of the worlds surface. In each region cables can be discovered running through the forest, connecting small buildings to one another. These buildings feature large quantities of computers and machines controlled or operated by the IO.
Polar Regions
The poles are permanently frozen, featuring some amazing glaciers and ice caverns. The poles feature little plant-life, though the occasional straggler will find its way, but bacterial life is relatively common in underground lakes and on surface rocks, where it uses the sun for energy during the summer period, laying dormant the rest of the year. Despite the worlds solidified core, the polar regions contain area's featuring geysers, powered by tidal forces from C0DA working on underground lakes. Due to the pressure, these geysers can reach up to great heights and temperatures and they can in fact be quite dangerous. Water from these geysers is also thought to be responsible for the many ice caverns in the area.
Temperate Region
The temperate rings feature heavy snow during winter, leaving a white blanket over everything which does not melt until spring. Almost as soon as the snow is gone, the entire local flora shoots up like there will be no tomorrow, blooming in a great multitude of different flowers until snow starts to fall again.
Most of the area is covered by forests though the region also features two large oceans, which extend over it and into the equatorial region. The surface of these oceans often freezes over in winter, though their depth ensures this is always limited to the surface area only.
Equatorial Region
Though it sometimes sees snow, the equatorial region features active plant-life for most of the year. In this region, grass-like plants are far more common, making for open fields in the forest area. The equatorial region features
Flora & Fauna
Lacking significant insect populations, most small plants on ECCO reproduce by releasing spores which actively seek out matching plants by floating on the wind. These spores do not posses any level of intelligence, despite continuous attempts by IO to communicate with them, but they have some very rudimentary information processing capabilities equivalent to some insects, using simple pattern and colour recognition to find matching plants. This also explains the large diversity in flowers, each plant wanting to make sure it stands out enough to allow spores from matching plants to find it. The flowering plants can be further divided into mono-generational and duo-generational. Spores generally carry both seeds and pollen from the plant, thus carrying both the next generation as seeds and the generation after that as pollen which will become new seeds.
Trees on ECCE, which extend from the equatorial forests to the outermost stretches of the temperate regions do not flowers but instead spread their pollen through the wind, the large forests, lower diversity and ease of cross breeding between different tree types making more effort unnecessary.
ECCE features very little in the way of animal life on its soil. Various birds and smaller mammals do inhabit the equatorial regions and some hibernating species also inhabit the temperate regions. Larger animals do not feature, being unable to find enough food to sustain their greater metabolisms, and amphibians and reptiles are unable to survive due to the lower temperatures.
The oceans are teeming with animal life, however, with countless types of fish, crustaceans, invertebrates, sponges and corals surviving comfortable whether the surface is frozen or not. Various birds feed on fish near the coastline, with some of the larger samples eating themselves so fat during summer that they become unable to fly due to their weight. By the time they come out of hibernation the next summer, they have lost up to 70% of their bodyweight, which they immediately begin to refill when the summer is back.
IO and Underworld
Despite being a large planet, ECCE's planetary core has mostly solidified, leaving a large network of underground caverns and magma chambers below the surface. These caves often feature enormous caverns filled with crystals as far as the eye can see. The polar regions are the most prominent in these, but the network spreads across the entire planet, going below the two oceans. Though there are some artificial hallways dug by machines, most of the network is natural.
Most of the underground caverns have cables running through them, and various open spaces feature large structures filled with the hardware on which IO operate and the machines used to maintain it. About 90% of the hardware of the IO resides underground, where it is better shielded from temperature fluctuations, animal and plant life.
