Roleplay Guide
[ Guides ]
This guide tells you the roleplay conventions of FWURG.
A roleplaying game, such a Fwurg, is a game in which the participants assume the roles of characters and collaboratively create stories. Players determine the actions of their characters based on their characterisation, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, you may improvise freely and your choices shape the direction and outcome of the game!
To start with this guide there is no incorrect way to roleplay. Here we give several convention as they are used in Fwurg.
Roleplaying is done on the forum by posts, each post listing what your character says and what their actions are. Storytellers, which are players that take up additional responsibility to help shape stories, determine the results of your actions using the game rules and they run a legion of NPC or Non-Player Characters that you can interact with.
The roleplay in Fwurg takes place in a universe inspired on the Star Wars setting, featuring Jedi and interstellar travel - as you will see however, there are many differences between traditional Star Wars and the events that take place in Fwurg.
In Character and Out of Character
In roleplaying games there is a line between the player and the character, known as 'In Character' or IC and 'Out of Character' or OOC. It is possible to play a character that has a different race, gender and personality to yourself.
For example Mariah a psychology student could be playing John Rambo a highly trained commando. As Rambo she could say things she would never say in real life. Also the game mechanics are not known to the character: a character does not know they have a higher attack bonus that another character, however they would know they are better at hitting things then the other guy. Your character's knowledge is called 'In Character', while your player knowledge is called 'Out of Character'. Likewise anything you say as a character is 'In Character' while anything you say as a player is 'Out of Character'.
Just as actions by a character or player are in character or out of character, the information in Fwurg is separated into In Character information, and Out of Character information. Out of character information includes such things as the game rules and character creation. This information is about the world this is not something the characters would know. Other information, such as the names of factions, the origin of a species or the background of characters in contrast is In Character information.
Forum Posting
The forum has two main parts:
- the IC Forum, with Union Politics for senate discussions and summits, General and Holonet for trade negotiations and conversations, and Administrative Actions for turn reports.
The IC section is used for roleplay with characters. The intention of this section of the forum is that only characters interact with other characters. Game comments should not be placed in this section.
The Forum Formatting Conventions are explained in the forum as some of the tricks are better explained in the forum format.
In the OOC section comments on the system can be made like when the website has a problem you can mention that here. Rule clarifications and other game related questions also go here.
To get started with roleplaying, you will want to make a character. To learn how to make a character, please check our Building a Character.
