This guide explains the basics for storytellers

A central part of Fwurg, especially in the area of Jedi, are storytellers. Storytellers are responsible for creating storylines in which the Jedi can act. Some game systems use words like Dungeon Master or Game Master for storytellers.

Because being a storyteller carries some responsibilities and requires detailed knowledge of the Fwurg setting, we very strongly advise players to first join a few existing stories to get a feel for the setting before becoming storytellers. To further help with this, storytellers meet online about once a month to share idea's and directions for their stories and to cooperate when their stories have a big impact on other parts of the game.

Posting a new mission

When you open a new mission in the Jedi forum, it is customary to use an NPC Jedi Master you control. The Jedi Master explains the purpose of the mission and some general background and calls for Jedi of a certain level (default: Padawans) to join the mission.

Included in your post should be the following details at the minimum and you can choose whether you tell it OOC or IC based on your own judgement.

  • What is the goal of the mission?
  • What type of mission is being undertaken?
  • What is the general background?
  • How many players can go?
  • What is the expected posting frequency?
  • What will be the different reward options?

This should tell your players what they have to do to win, what type of skills they should have (stealth, combat, etc) and where the mission is placed in relation to the world (is it a diplomatic encounter with a small and insignificant world or is it part of a huge war between two superpowers).

Based on our experience we have found that three players is an absolute maximum to keep any degree of control and speed to the game. A posting frequency of once a week or twice a week for fast paced stories is generally a good idea.

Finally, rewards are preferably offered as a choice between options. Common awards may be a choice between a skill point in one of two specific skills, or perhaps a choice between a combat manoeuvre or a force power. Storylines should never reward a force level - there are special rules for that. Big stories that take a long time to finish are not advised but if they do happen, more than one reward may be appropriate.

Checks

As a storyteller you will be asked to adjudicate certain actions taken by players to see if they are successful. Remember, Jedi are very powerful individuals so they are also very capable at most things. That said, it will be up to you to judge whether a player succeeds.

Things to consider are how specific the Jedi's skill is to the task at hand (being a skilled speeder mechanic is more relevant to fixing a speeder than being a generic mechanic), how difficult the task is (fixing a broken engine is probably harder than repairing a broken headlight) and what external circumstances are taking place (repairing a speeder while it is plummeting down towards certain doom and using a pocketknife is harder than doing the same repair in a properly fitted garage.

In the end however, the decision is up to you and the flow of the story may be a factor to consider as well. Use your best judgement.
