Astrian Culture
General values and norms
Astrians hold equality and freedom in high regard. There is no established 'norm' to which people want to adjust themselves. Each Astrian is allowed to be who they are, luckily most are still follow the law. However every Astrian views things in their own way. More often than not when two Astrians come to the same conclusion, they followed different paths to reach it. It is relatively safe to assume that no two Astrians think alike. No one is looked down upon, not even criminals.
Astrians have no marriage system, this has led to a misconception outside the ACA that Astrians are polygamous however this is not necessarily true. Astrians are free to stay with a single partner, multiple partners or no partner at all. Children are cared for by parents and other partners if there are any. Sometimes parents abandon their child, while abortion is legal and covered by most health insurance. These children are left on the doorstep of an orphanage. These are obligated to take in any child found on their doorstep.
Since ancient history homosexuality has been a part of Astrian ways. Tolerance of this is currently more a necessity than a choice as an estimated 60% of females and 50% of males are homo- or bisexual. Over a hundred years ago a way was invented for these couples to have children of their own. Female couples choose one to carry the child. Male couples either use a carrier woman, usually a good friend, or a birthing-vat, basically a regular clone-vat.
Politeness is considered a common courtesy and is used far and wide by Astrians. The adaptive disposition they have has resulted that most Astrians adapt to the person the are speaking to.
Long standing traditions
Among the oldest traditions on Stellaria is the summer preparations. A period of half a month is used to gather food and water, as well as isolate housing against the heat and drought that occurs when Stellaria passes between Novalia and Lianee. Every Astrian able to help does so. Those to young, to old or to weak to help are cared for. Current technologies have made the preparations easier but they are still deemed necessary.
Another old tradition is the rainy festival. It takes place at the start of the rainy season and is meant as a celebration of the end of summer.
Crystal Wall
Astrians have a very deep respect of the dead. Disrespecting the dead is the greatest insult Astrians have. During their history this has been the reason for several assassinations and betrayals.
A testimony to the dead on Stellaria is the Crystal Wall. It is a the oldest structure on Stellaria, the oldest part being around 8000 years old. It is several thousands of kilometres long and completely made of crystal. The oldest piece of writing is on the wall. A name, that no one knows how to pronounce, and a date. “the third day of lone blue sun” is the best estimated translation, most likely indicating the third day of summer. Apart from this writing the Crystal Wall is said to hold the name of every Astrian that has died. Newer sections of the wall use projectors to display the names of the dead.
The wall is maintained by black robed and hooded persons. They are called the Guardians of the Wall. They can regularly be seen cleaning the wall by hand. They are the only ones allowed to touch the Crystal Wall and interfering with them, or touching the wall, is a severe crime. Large warning signs are placed around the Crystal Wall to warn tourists, non-Astrians and even Astrians themselves of these things as committing these crimes tend to lead to an angry vigilante mob lynching the perpetrator on sight, instead of a fair trial.
Divine Nova Triage
The Nova Triage is an ancient Astrian religious group that worships stars as goddesses. They are the oldest religious group on Stellaria and their origin traces back long before The Cataclysm of Partesia. Females dominate in the Triage but males are not discriminated against. It is by far the largest religious group in the ACA having several thousand members and approximately 700.000 followers. Parts of the Stellarian Triad Federation where based on the Divine Nova Triage.
Beliefs
According to the Divine Nova Triage each and every star is a goddess and planets in their orbits are their children. The goddesses watch over their children and the children of the other goddesses. While the Triage worships all stars, they devote special attention to the three stars of the Novalia System as, according to their beliefs, they are the goddesses that created Stellaria and watch over her.
The ancient legend from which the stellar bodies in the Novalia System derive their names is from the Triages Holy Scriptures.
A central part of the Triage's beliefs is the Great Journey. It's the belief that every person travels a road of life. This road can be bumpy, smooth, hill up or hill down and is filled with crossroads, that represent choices, and obstacles, that represent hardships. From this also comes the blessing: “may the Goddesses light your path.”
Internal Structure
The Triage has three separate schools. Each is led by a High Priestess and has a number of Lady-Priestesses in addition to a following of nuns and monks. The schools are identified by a colour.
School of Purity
The School of Purity is devoted to peace, serenity, freedom and chastity. Their colour is white. It is the largest of the three schools. Members of this school are required to take a vow of chastity. Meditation, prayer and gardening are the main daily activities the nuns and monks perform. The sisters and brothers are taught pacifism. The priestesses serve as enclaves to the outside world as the sisters and brothers are allowed only severely limited access to the outside world in order to prevent them from being tainted. All members are permitted to leave the school in order to join one of the other schools or leave the Triage as a whole.
School of Blood
The School of Blood devotes itself to discipline, order, martial arts and honour. As their name implies their colour is red. It is the only all female school in the Triage and also the smallest. The members under go harsh training before they are considered members. If they complete the training they become part of one of the most respected and feared groups in the Astrian Colonial Authority. The school protects the Triage and enforces its rules on the members. The nuns train every day to increase and uphold their skills. Outsiders often look in awe at the ceremonial armour and weapons they carry. These weapons and armour have slightly higher specifications than those of the Colonial Marines standard issue equipment. The priestesses serve as commanding officers, unofficial the also serve as sparing groups for the schools High Priestess. Membership of this school is for life, but members may go outside the Triage to move on with their lives. A fair portion of the female officers in the Astrian Colonial Military are members of the School of Blood.
School of Knowledge
The School of Knowledge is devoted to wisdom, the Holy Scriptures, the passing on of the Triages teachings and maintaining the Holy Library. Their colour is blue. The members are taught to read the ancient texts. Their daily activities are prayer and copying the ancient texts by hand. An important part of the school is the Holy Library, that contains records and journals from long ago and the Holy Scriptures. It contains the history of the Divine Nova Triage and the Astrians. Some say it holds the only record of what happened during The Cataclysm, but since the Holy Library only allows the priestesses of the School of Knowledge and the High Priestesses to enter that is considered a rumour.
Wisdom Guard
While not an actual school within the Triage, the Wisdom Guard is an elite unit. Its members are Lady-Priestesses of both the School of Blood and the School of Knowledge. They are charged with the protection of the knowledge of the entire Triage. Unlike the Lady-Priestesses devoted to only one school the Lady-Priestesses of the Wisdom Guard don't directly report to the High Priestesses. Throughout their history they have also frequently acted as the bodyguards of the Lady of Knowledge.
Travellers
The Astrian Travellers are relatively new but in the few decades they have existed they have become a part of Astrian culture.
They enjoy more freedom than normal Astrians as most laws don't apply to them. Part of the reason this is done is because Travellers have a clear sense of justice and right or wrong.
There is a long poem called The Traveller's Journey that describes what it is like to be a Traveller. If certain verses are recited to the right people, they will help the person reciting the verses. In exchange these people can count on aid from the Travellers themselves. Some people in the ACA have gotten very wealthy from this arrangement.
A task Travellers often perform is making star charts. Most charts used by Astrians, and all charts used by the Colonial Navy, where made by Travellers. Most of the Travellers now are part of the Astrian Traveller Fleet which surveys sectors for colonisation efforts.
Traditional Clothing
Most of the time, Astrians wear the same types of clothing as other humanoid races. However, these clothes differ greatly from the clothes worn through most of Astrian History. These traditional clothes have recently seen a return in popularity among Astrians and recent fashion in the ACA is combining aspects of both regular and traditional clothing.
For most important celebrations, formal events and ceremonies in ACA territory Astrians choose to wear traditional clothing. In the Astrian language the name for this type of clothing is 'Afuku' and for regular clothing 'Yofuku'. Afuku as a collective noun for the type of clothing and translates to 'Astrian clothing'. Commonly basic galactic refers to the arrangement of clothing of afuku as a kimono, in Astrian it refers to the specific article of clothing.
There are different types of kimonos for both men and women, as well as various levels of formality. Formality is indicated by the positioning of the patterns and how many crests the outer most layer has, ranging from one to five. An indication of the affluence of the wearer is the amount of layers the kimono has and the patterns embroidered onto and woven into the kimono. The more layers and the more extensive the patterns the wealthier the wearer. Formal kimonos generally have more layers than informal ones. Male kimonos look more plain then female kimonos. To prevent the wearer from becoming to hot or cold based on the layers different thickness's of fabrics are used and linings are added or removed.
The crests are small insignias chosen by the person wearing the kimono.
The sash that holds the kimono closed and in its place is called an obi. Obi are often tied with decorative knots.
Personal servants can be identified by the low amount of layers and relatively simple patterns. Additionally their obi has a miniature of the knot their master or mistress uses on the upper left side of the knot on their own obi. Servants kimonos generally go well with the kimono of their master or mistress.
