[Mirda] Shadow of War visits the Veolian Commonwealth <private>
((OOC: This topic is private between the Stellarian Triad Federation and the Veolian Commonwealth.))
Shadow of War dropped out of hyperspace just outside sector 10 -5.
He carefully disabled his plasma-cannons and his other weapon systems, isolating them from his power grid.
Shadow then started broadcasting on an open channel.
"Shadow of War to Veolian control. I have disabled all weapon systems and am awaiting escort to Mirda as per the agreement made by Veolia and the STF."

Five large capital ships dropped out of hyperspace.
"This is admiral Saman Machal of the Trance of Unhesitating Speed. Please stand by while we scan your vessel for regulated substances and active weapon systems."
While the scan was going, the capital ships took up an escort formation around Shadow of War. Though Shadow of War clearly outclassed them in size, he had the creeping suspicion that these vessels would not hesitate to engage him in combat.
"Shadow of War, you have been cleared for passage in Veolian territory. Please be aware that the trade of cybernetic goods is regulated within the Veolian Commonwealth. We will transmit the route to the rendezvous location momentarily."
And indeed, half a minute later a rather complex jumping solution was transmitted to Shadow of War. As space travel was second nature to him, he could easily see that this solution was designed to circumvent some kind of barrier. Most likely a this route passed through a nebula. The most interesting were the timing factors in the solution. It seemed as if this were really six solutions rolled up in one, with the timing being the crucial factor.
"Please stay with your escort at all times. We are unaware of the properties of your hyperspace engine. Please synchronize to our jumping pattern. Our jump will last roughly one and a half hours. Saman out."
Following the jumping solution, all six vessels jumped to hyperspace in perfect unison. It was tricky to determine, as he was jumping as well, but Shadow of War could not detect any of the usual side-effects coming from the veolian ships: one moment they were normal, then their hyperdrive energy spiked and that was it.
((OOC: Since most factions have their own variant of hyperdrive technology, they each come with their own quirks. I'd love to hear a bit about what the veolian vessels pick up as Shadow of War jumps. This jump also offers you the opportunity to hail the vessels and their captains if you want ^_^))

"Roger that, synchronizing jumping pattern. Be advised I have zero momentum or impulse when I exit hyperspace, please refrain from dropping out directly behind me."
The veolian ships detected seven simultaneous, but distinct, hyperdrive pulses from Shadow as they started to jump. Then again, stronger this time. And another, again stronger and with less time in between. This continued, each time stronger pulses and shorter intervals, until their sensors could no longer distinguish the separate pulses and they transitioned to hyperspace.
Shadow wasn't very surprised by the oddities of the veolian hyperdrives, he had seen many different methods and had come to expect unique quirks different methods provided.
He made a few small tweaks to his course and continued to observe the veolian ships with intrigue.
While he observed them he hailed the closest ship.
"This is Shadow of War, I was just wondering if there where any interesting stellar objects observable from the Smi-Halek system."

"This is admiral Saman Malach. Please refrain from any further course corrections and stick to the course we sent you. This course was carefully plotted to take into account the current eddies in the Parda nebula.
The Smi-Halek system is situated in the Parda nebula. The edge of the heliospheric bubble, where the solar winds push out the nebula's gasses is called Halek. The energy build-up there generates impressive energy discharges over, and the denser gasses have a thousand beautiful shades of blue and purple.
And the stellar heap of Smi. Though she is classified as a binary star, most people you will speak with will consider her a single star. The two cores exchanges stellar matter without any hindrance, and both cores are in perfect balance. The strong solar winds do help to sustain the heliospheric bubble, or so I have been told.
But other than Smi and Halek, there is precious little to observe."
((OOC: Everyone drops out of hyperspace without momentum or impulse... This is a universal fact to prevent speed-of-light catapults (though this is not noted on hyperspace, it really should be o_O). Also, changing course in hyperspace is extremely dangerous (which is on that page as well ^_^)))

"My apologies, but due to a difference between our FTL protocols there was a small inconsistency in the relevant jump data. Resulting in a wrong course on my end.
The course correction was necessary to ensure the correct arrival point."
((OOC: The coarse correction was very small (about a light-second to the left at the destination). On the momentum/impulse: To be absolutely clear, if I'm not mistaken when a ship drops out of hyperspace it can still be moving (at least that's what you see in the movies) when Shadow drops out of hyperspace he's in a dead stop, not moving in any direction. Just putting it out there.))

"This is admiral Saman Malach. We have double-checked our jumping solution. There is no inconsistency in the jump data. You have not taken into account the current eddies in the Parda nebula around our destination. We will not be held responsible for the damage to your hull or the destruction of your vessel should you decide not to revert back your course. I advice you to revert back to your old course, and stay in formation. Our pilots have centuries of experience navigating this part of space."
((OOC: I made a OOC topic for this. Sorry to ruin your hyperdrive peculiarity o_O
You can correct your course in hyperspace, but it is very bad idea: the Hyperspace page actually says: "It is possible to steer in hyperspace, but this will usually result in horrible accidents upon exiting hyperspace." Regardless, rest assured that the nebula will not destroy Shadow of War, but it might offer a rough ride.))

Shadow chose to remain quiet instead of starting an argument.
While he had little doubt the admiral was a capable commander, it was clear his knowledge of hyperspace and the calculations and machinery that where involved was limited.
He was impressed by the veolian ships sensors however. That they where able to detect the minor shift in his course was quite a feat.
The correction kept him in formation so he decided a bumpy ride was better than crashing into one of the veolian ships and just kept quiet for the rest of the journey.
((OOC: I got it the first time, sheesh. I made a mistake, no need to overreact. Now can we please drop the subject and continue?))

The one and a half hour journey passed without events, and soon Shadow of War the group reached the end of their jump.
After the drop out of hyperspace, Shadow of War found himself alone in a thick nebula, his sensors not yet calibrated for the interference the nebula's energy discharged coursed. The Nebula was violently churning, though Shadow of War's large mass prevent him from being swept up by the eddies.
"This ... Malach ... high-frequency ... pulses ... locate ... out of Halek." came the severely distorted and crackling message from his veolian escort. A few seconds later, Shadow of War picked up a series of five rapid energy pulses and a short silence before the signal repeated itself again, and again. Using the pulses to calibrate his sensors, he could quickly determine which way to go, and started navigating out of the nebula and into the heliospheric bubble.
During the flight, Shadow of War was hit twice by energy discharges that seem to build up around him. Though it rattled him, it did no permanent damage. Half an hour later of difficult flying later his escort flanked him again, as they were already waiting for him at the edge of the bubble.
"This is admiral Saman Malach. Our scans indicate that you did not sustain any serious damage.", the admiral sounded both concerned and relieved, "It is a good thing that we have a safety net of location buoys near most arrival sites. If you can confirm that no serious damage was taken we shall escort you to Mirda, where local flight control will inform you of your landing vector."
Just as Shadow of War and his escort started accelerating towards the system, four patrol vessels flew past them into the nebula. Shadow of War picked up some radio chatter as they flew past.
"This is patrol Zulu Five Gamma. We are responding to an automated alert from the net." / "This is imperial escort Zulu Seven Charlie. It was a false alarm. Our visitor landed in the net accidentally." / "This is patrol Zulu Five Gamma. Roger that. We will do a sweep for dead-dropped contraband and illegally deployed equipment. Zulu Five Gamma out." / "This is imperial escort Zulu Seven Charlie. We detected no such goods aboard our visitor. Happy hunting. Zulu Seven Charlie out."
Soon thereafter, they arrived near Mirda, and the escort smoothly entered a stable orbit.
"This is Commander Riksan Anila of the Imperial Guard. Shadow of War, you have been cleared for landing at the Sain'ya military base. Her imperial highness is expecting you."
As the veolian's had little experience with landing ships the size of Shadow of War, they only transmitted no-fly zones and restricted airspace regions and left him plenty of room for navigation and controlled descent. During his descent Shadow of War was flanked by eight well-armed fighters and six gunships. His scans told him that these were not intended for show only.
The Sain'ya military base had enough landing space for eight capital ships, and though Shadow of War was going to take up four of them, he had space to spare as all eight slots were devoid of ships.
((OOC: At the danger of invoking your wrath (which will probably be expressed during the write-a-thon ^_^): the point I rather failed to make was that you can't adjust your course during the jump, unless you do it to match someone else's course (in which case you'd better hope that their jumping solution is correct)... Apologies for being unclear T_T
So I tried to warn you, twice, that this is actually a self-destructive action -- if this were a Jedi thread and I the ST, you would not like the consequences.
But I'll drop the subject: let's get back to roleplaying. I hope you don't mind that I fast-forwarded a bit to the actual arrival; I assumed that you wanted to do some posturing while landing Shadow of War :D))

Shadow of War didn't seem to have any trouble flying through Mirda's atmosphere. His descent and deceleration nearly linear. He was careful to avoid no-fly zones and restricted areas.
When he was almost at the landing site, his front and rear nacelles started moving. Rearranging to positions that made them look like legs. Shadow had entered Walker mode.
Under the low, distant roar from his engines, that would probably be a whole lot louder where it closer, Shadow gently touched down with his front towards the place the imperial princess would be. Towering some of the buildings there as he stood several kilometres tall.
After he had landed the engine roar stopped, but a soft hum could still be heard coming from him.
Then his front started to lower until it was about 500 metres above the ground. It was a bow, for as far as something his size could bow.
He stayed in that position until the princess started speaking.
((OOC: I'll admit I overreacted myself in my previous post. I was a bit angry because I was tired and a few other things I won't bore you with. My apologies for that.
It was a bit late for me to correct the problem so I tried explaining it, I reasoned different hyperdrives would have a few different calculations, units, etc. that could result in two ships using the same jumping solution ending in different courses. I thought I made it clear this was the case (which evidently it was not) and that the correction was to resolve that problem.))

The observation platform carrying the imperial princess and her retinue started to ascended until they were 50 meters into the air. Still looking up, she spoke.
"Welcome to Mirda, Shadow of War.", she stated in a clear voice which was transmitted via radio. "I must admit, I did not expect your vessel to be this big."

Shadow kept the bowing position he held.
A deep, slightly synthesized sounding voice resonated through the air.
"Thank you, for allowing me to land on your planet." It sounded as if the voice came from just a few metres in front of the princess. "Please there is no need to use a radio, Your Highness.
And you may call me Shadow.
My anti-turbulence systems allow me to produce low volume sounds near you and my sensors can pick up your voice with ease.
As for my size, I hope it doesn't pose a problem for you."

After giving the microphone to one of her servants, the princess replied.
"It does not. I was just surprised. I was told that you were a cyborg that commanded a ship, but I did not expect you to command such a large vessel.
It seems we have not been properly introduced. I take it that you are a member of the Stellarian Triad Federation's military, but why don't you start by telling me your name? I am princess Saret Lirosa, daughter of Saret Ilius and Saret Taihira. Your vessel is called Shadow of War, but I have yet to be told of your own name."

"I fear you have been misinformed, your highness. Though I doubt it was intentionally."
Shadow was slightly amused by the misconception, but he understood it might be a somewhat difficult concept to wrap ones head around.
"You see I am not in command of this vessel. The ship is my body. So I am Shadow of War.
Though I have a military rank, I am not part of the STF Joint Military Forces. The rank is unofficial, I have it so I won't get hassled if I defend myself from pirates."

"I see. Lady Nehket Aeka told me of this, but I couldn't believe her. So if I understand you correctly, your name is Shadow of War, and you are a warship?", she said a little doubtful.
"Technically you are correct, your highness.
However, I would appreciate it if you could see me as what I am. A Traveller and not a vessel of war. My purpose never was combat and it never will be."

"Unfortunately, when I look at you, I see a 20 kilometer long capital ship capable of withstanding barrages of squadrons of lesser vessels. Your weapon systems are such that you would be able to vaporize this military base and me with it without serious effort on your part, or so I have been told.", the princess spoke clearly and seemed slightly agitated. "How can I not see you as a vessel of war? Even your name seems to hint at the fact... However, I am not here to discuss this point of semantics with you."
The princess motioned for a servant to bring her a glass of water.
"Lady Nehket Aeka told me of your intended journey through the Union. We are your first stop, are we not? What are your impressions so far?"

While Shadow slightly regretted he was still viewed as a warship, he was happy to change the subject.
"I accidentally dropped out of hyperspace in Halek, my own fault, but I did get to see quite the spectacle from the gas cloud and energy discharges.
I also took a look at Smi. I am quite amazed two stars can be so close together and still have their own separate core."
Shadow sounded like a child talking about his favourite holonet show.
"I am also surprised this system doesn't have an asteroid-catcher." His tone became a bit concerned.
"Did you have frequent asteroid impacts in the past?"

"Halek is indeed very beautiful. Every night we get to see its full glory, though the energy discharges are too small to see from the surface, we do see patches of the nebula light up. Of course, everything we see is delayed by 85 minutes, but we can see our fleets coming home by the numerous discharges."
"And it is a good thing that you are such a well-armoured vessel. Lesser vessels would have been severely damaged by the discharges. Though smaller ships would build up less discharges."
"I don't think we had many asteroid impacts in the past. What is an asteroid catcher?"

"It's an unofficial term for a large gas giant, or an additional star in some cases, that draws asteroids and other stellar debris away from a planet further in-system. It makes the planet more suitable for life as it it isn't constantly bombarded by such objects."
Shadow explained the concept, making a note the records would need to be adjusted on Stellaria. That was necessary since the standing theory was life was a practical impossibility without an asteroid catcher, evidently this wasn't the case.
"Halek reminds me a bit of the Caretaker-nebula back home, with the difference it can be seen during the day."

"I think that we have less asteroids as there aren't any other system nearby... Your system is also located inside a nebula? That explains why your body is so large. As a traveller you should be able to leave and enter your system as you desire."
((OOC: It might have been a bit unclear, but the Smi-Halek system is inside a nebula that spans roughly a third of the sector. So there isn't anything else visisble from the system. On Mirda during the day the atmosphere is normal, but during the night the whole sky is filled with nebulous imagery. The system is inside a small bubble of cleared nebula (due to the strong solar winds and gasseous mass expelled from the Smi heap) and that's it.))

"No, the Novalia system isn't located inside the Caretaker-nebula. The nebula surrounds Novalia. It looks a bit like a half opened flower."
Shadow paused a moment.
"I heard that your world has two species that call themselves Veolians. May I ask what the difference is between the two? And is it important for you to distinguish yourselves?"

"I am afraid that you have been misinformed. There are indeed two species on Mirda, but they are named differently: the Veolians and the Twi'lek. But you are probably referring to the difference between veolians and hemet veolians."
"Veolians and hemet veolians are part of the same species, though some would classify hemets as a subspecies. As you might not be aware, the veolian species is divided into a number of races. Each of these races is perfectly capable of reproducing with any other veolian race, so they can not be viewed as distinct species. Most of the differences between the races is in physical appearance. The one thing that binds all veolians together is hemetism.
A good example of this is the difference between our senator and my fathers first wife, the first empress consort. Both women are hemet veolians, yet they are different. Lady Nehket has hair, while my father's wife's head is adorned with elegant ridges.
Our scientists are not clear on the exact nature of hemetism, but we know that it is, at least in part, hereditary. Since every race is susceptible to it, hemets do not form a distinct race but are instead a group of races within the veolian species."
"But that is only background. You asked for the difference between hemet veolians and veolians... For comparison: normal veolians are roughly the same as humans. And hemets are superior to normal veolians in every aspect.
We need no sleep, and we can consciously partition our attention. We can process large amounts of information without being distracted by other activities, and we can telepathically inform others of our will. With practice, we can hone our empathic projection to the point of provoking extreme emotional and physical responses in those below us.
With respect to normal veolians we have vastly increased physical prowess, with both my physical strength exceeding three times the normal veolian and an increase of their fine motor control. I could easily lift my servant from the ground with a single hand and hold her like that for a few hours. I would also survive a fall that would kill a normal Veolian or human with as little injury as a few broken ribs, and those would regenerate within a matter of days.
And next to that, we are very long lived allowing us to have a broad array of experience and skill to build upon during the course of our lives."

"I see. I find it a bit strange, that a subspecies has a higher tissue density but the regular species does not.
Apparently Astrians have a higher tissue density than most species, making us stronger and heavier than humans.
I even heard Astrians are often recruited as club bouncers on Unity."
Shadow paused a moment.
"When you say 'those below you' who exactly do you mean?"

"No, no, you misunderstand. You wrongly assume that we have a higher tissue density than our normal brethren. This is not entirely true. While we have a little extra mass...", a servant whispered something in her ear, "roughly 10 kilograms, and our tissue structure drastically changes, we do not have a much higher tissue density. We are not much heavier than normal veolians."
"If I didn't know you weren't from around here, I would think that you are accusing me of being heavy.", she added with a smile. "Of course, your enormous startship body gave it away. I'm sure you would make a very intimidating bouncer."
"Though our increased physical prowess would suggest such changes, we are not entirely clear on the exact way a hemet becomes so superior. The current theory is that our physical prowess is linked to the energy outburst when one becomes hemet, this seems to be somehow linked to the force, or some form of psionic energy."
"I'm rambling... you asked for something else.", the princess seemed a little annoyed by something, but it wasn't clear what.
"With those below us, I mean anyone that is not my equal or a superior being. I mean my servants, lower nobility, all normal veolians. Most humans and twi'lek, and most other races that are roughly equal to normal veolians. Of course there are a few individuals that are the apex of their species, such as Jedi, but most individuals are below any hemet veolian.
Some, not satisfied with their lot in life try to lift themselves up. If they do so on their own, this is commendable. But if they do so by cheating out of the evolutionary boundaries of their species, they should either be guided back, or left to become extinct."

"My apologies, your highness. I didn't mean to offend you." Shadow quickly apologised, not having realised his words could be viewed as rude.
"I assumed you where similar to Astrians. As we are about two to three times heavier than humans for an average adult. Of coarse Travellers aren't included in those numbers."
Deciding to risk the chance he was the cause of the princess' irritation, Shadow continued his inquiry.
"That almost sounds like you can control the minds of others, including those from other species. Could that not be seen as dangerous and a cause to implement severe restrictions to Veolians by other Union Worlds?"
