Join us as we review the amazing power of the Highmonian wind gods, look at the monsoon rains of Remunzia and investigate where the fog on Niom come from. But we will be visiting many more worlds in the Union to look at their weather patterns, with a special focus on...

the extreme!"

((OOC: This is your chance to show off your extreme climates and earn some (:ip) as you're doing it! Feel free to add images, which I am certain are available for all sorts of weather! And remember, this is about... extreme. This thread will be closed May 12th, so be sure to enter before then!))

Episode 1: Niom

Niom is well known for its thorough bureaucracy, and for foreigners getting lost in it. But few know that there is another, much darker force where one can get lost in.

Most of the surface of Niom is covered in a permanent mist, reducing visibility to about a kilometre or so. Contrary to popular beliefs, this mist is merely water vapour suspended in the air, not pollution.

But that is before it gets... extreme!

Image

When the winds and seasons conspire, that mist can suddenly turn into a fog so thick that it becomes impossible to see beyond ones nose. In many cities, streets are required to have ropes and lines run past buildings so as to allow travellers to find their way to their destination. Other places rely on special blowers that get rid of the fog in a localized area. Some of it, anyway.

The fog comes from the thousands upon thousands of lakes that litter the surface. Due to the planets higher gravity, which also helps keep the clouds near the surface, Niom is exceptionally flat, and it does not have a large ocean, but rather its water is spread over countless lakes or "puddles" as the locals call them, each a few kilometres in size and connected by natural canals - as one cannot call them rivers when they do not flow in any particular direction.

Differences in temperatures and wind cause the water vapour to form into minuscule droplets blocking sight. And because the winds are strong due to the flat surface, fog can come rolling in at a moments notice.

Within the fog, objects cast three-dimensional shadows. So when you walk through the fog with a lamp to find your way, and you look over your shoulder into the mist... all you'll see is gray... Gray and a three-dimensional shadow of a giant, forever following you... And once your heart slows down enough for you to think again, you'll know the weather on Niom is...

Episode 2: Remunzia

The Silver Forest of Remunzia are not silver all year round and not silver everywhere. In fact, there is little silver in the ground due to a complete lack of surface mining on the world. However, there is one thing that Remunzia has a lot of: rain.

Take a look at this:

Image

Now on many worlds, that is already a lot of rain. But Remunzia takes it... to the extreme.

When the monsoon season arrives, water that has been building up throughout the rest of the year finally gets a chance to come down, and boy does it come down. In 24 hours, over 5000 liters of rain can fall per square meters during these periods! Such extreme rains can wash away entire trees!

Image

These monsoon rains are home to certain species of fish and amphibians, who's eggs and young are so small that they get picked up into the clouds, where they grow such that when the rain falls, they literally have full grown fish and frogs falling out of the skies!

After you get hit in the face by one of those, you'll understand that the rains on Remunzia are...

Episode 3: Stellaria

Stellaria, known to be the homeworld of the Astrians, made infamous by a rebellion during their membership of the Union. At the moment it is raining.

See for yourself:

Image

This rain has been falling non-stop around the planet for several months. Which is... extreme.

But that's not all. A picture taken from the air of one of Stellaria's largest lakes:

It has been brought to a boil by four and a half months of sunlight from the system's three stars. For people who like to sunbathe here we recommend tanning lotion factor...

Episode 4: Dhiahamara

For our next episode, we are going to the homeworld of the Teprogena, Dhiahamara. Over the year the weather is very gentle for the planet. It has a clear sky and little to no clouds. It seldom rains. Although this alone is intense, it is not yet Extreme! You what they say: It's always sunny at Dhiahamara ;).

Here you the city Ocivi on the Traconsitus continent on one of its bad days. Due to a low pressure area in the mountain peaks, clouds are formed and a thick fog is rolling down from the mountains. That is what they say. If you ask me, this is not even close to mist. We think it is a pretty nice day in Ocivi.
Image

However, once a year thick clouds start to form over the planet. Water is evaporated over the entire year and stored in the upper air streams of the planet. After a whole year of pretty weather, the upper air streams get pretty much saturated with water. Warm weather, air saturated with water and oceans? The perfect ingredients for the... Extreme!

All planet life knows what's ahead of them and search for shelter. Yes, even the plants and trees brace themselves for what's coming. The saturated air layer breaks open literally, suddenly there is nothing holding back the rain and when it comes, it comes hard! With thunderbolts and lightning, lots and lots of lightning. With an average of 1000 thunder strikes per hectare each second, I assure you, you don't wanna be out there.
Image
For one to three weeks the planet is covered in storms. Enough rain falls to fill entire lakes which in turn feed water to rivers for a whole year!
Image

Sea, land, mountians, desert, not a single bit of planet is spared by this onslaught of natural power beams. This is what I call...Extreme!

Episode 5: Sirip

Welcome back to our next episode of Extreme Galaxy!

Today's location is Sirip, the first and only moon of Mirda in the Smi-Halek system. We have seen extreme fog, extreme rain, extreme summer, and extreme lightning! Today we will look at a new type of extreme weather.

Sirip has no atmosphere, which in itself is pretty extreme. And only because there is no atmosphere is the weather on Sirip possible. Instead of a nice breeze, Sirip has Solar Winds! The impact of the charged solar particles on the surface of Sirip is stored in the fine grains of sand. Where Niom has fog banks, Sirip has static banks!

Image

The discharges of those static banks look pretty from the surface of Mirda. When you are standing in them your hair will stand up so straight, it will poke holes in your envirosuit, literally leaving you breathless, then you'll know the weather on Sirip is...

Episode 6: Enthor

Today's episode of Extreme weather is a throwback to pre-terraformation Enthor, before the Veolians came in and cleaned up. Due to the cataclysmic variablity of the star Kal which Enthor orbits around, every so often Kal sends out large doses of radiation, wiping away a bit more of the already thin atmosphere of Enthor. These are well predicted by the Institute for Solar Montoring, but you better make sure you pay attention to the warning sirenes and get underground fast, because it gets Extreme!

Image

Radiation quickly spreads across the surface of Enthor, producing bright lights all across the sky everwhere. We tried to take some footage for you, but the intense radiation interferes with our camera equipment! All life knows it has to duck deep, and makes it ways to the numerous underground caverns of the planet. Anything left on the surface is a nice and deep fried meal for the animals coming back out. Everything on the planet has specifically adapted to mitigate these bursts, that's how you know the weather is ...
