The empress seems to enjoy letting Dana take the lead. She let Dana pull her close and simply enjoyed dancing with a skillful partner.

The empress smiled at Dana and her explanation. "I am well aware of the flows of wealth", she replied, though her thoughts seemed to be elsewhere.

"I am curious about something you said earlier. You stated earlier that you had multiple girlfriends", the empress asked with a slightly softer voice to make sure they weren't overheard. "Do they have multiple romantic involvements as well, or are they exclusively with you?"

The couple continued to dance around the floor.

"I did not know the Twi'lek lived solely in once place. But it seems that indeed everything is under control and we can enjoy a lovely evening lady Susri. I believe it is still your turn to ask." says merchant Aosen smiling.

While doing so he let's lady Susri turn around and expecting a question once she has returned to his side.

"Oh no, I meant that there was only a small twi'lek population in Gānva. Not that there was only a twi'lek population in Gānva, that would be ridiculous...", the lady stated just before she twirls around.

"How would you characterize the Hiocan's current trade deals with other worlds?", she asks when she finishes her twirl. "I have heard some rumours that several of the smaller worlds do not take notice of the Union's economy, though others say that they are just afraid to do what they're good at."

"Yes that's correct." Dana replied, lowering her voice as well. Not because she was uncomfortable talking about it, but rather that she didn't know if speaking openly about it was in conflict with Veolian etiquette.

"Some of them have other romantic relationships and some only have me. It's their own choice and it doesn't change my feelings for each of them."

In a joking tone she added.

"The only downside is that I'm the only one who gets nagged by dad because he wants grandchildren."

The empress let out a soft laugh, though it did not sound particularly joyful. "Well, there are some things that do not change regardless of culture, it seems. At least, now that our worlds have joined forces in certain technological endeavours, you should be able to alleviate his concerns, not?"

She let out a sigh.

"I sincerely hope you do have that option", she said with a little sadness in her voice as she leans a little more into her dance partner. Though the distance between the two could not be called appropriate any more, the empress seems to care little about that. Nor did any of the nearby dancing veolians, apparently, based on their lack of reaction.

Dana pulled the veolian empress against her in an embrace.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hit a nerve." She whispered. For a few moments after that Dana said nothing, simply holding the veolian woman close to comfort her. Then she softly whispered something in her ear.

"If there are no alternatives for you here, I might be able to lend a hand." Dana's tone was one of genuine support, there wasn't a trace of ill intent.

"The Hiocan Societies economy has had quite some economic changes. We have quite a board spectrum on goods that we produce. Consumer goods (:congoods) and Food (:food) have always been our biggest export products. We are currently increasing our (:rares) related products, we are turning Aikum into a big research facility. We have always improved our production depending onto the Union demand, but now we need to look at our own market and not forget the valuable (:rares) which we have.

The Hiocan Society is a trustworthy trade partner and we are looking for cooperation. We think about the Union and our own economy. Our trade deals are balanced so both parties profit.

The various Houses make the Veolian economy quite complex. Each House has it's own economy and this has both it pros and cons. What are your toughts on the Veolian economy?"

"I don't think our economy is more complex than that of most other Union members. Most of our internal market is dictated by the same supply and demand is the Union itself, with corporations, houses and trading firms each offering and buying both services and goods from others.

The overal division of the economy is very simple really. House Iaat does (:organics), house Nehket recently stepped into the (:gasses), house Dewa was always be a house of bankers so the step to (:kelwaraan-credits) is not strange. House Khaw maintains the extensive genealogical archives and drives much research in that area. House Shebi has a lot of influence in many things, mostly (:weapons) and the military. And House Saret controls the whole of the (:terraform) business. Of course, all the great houses own companies and industrial complexes in all sectors, but the focus is clear."

Lady Susri danced in silence a little as she thought on the subject.

"What is different is that the great houses and veolian corporations are more direct in their dealings, the moment they have enough income to have an impact on the intergalactic economy they will prefer to actively seek out trade instead of waiting for the embassy to determine their trades for them. This might seem more difficult from the perspective of other, as many parties within the commonwealth directly contact their embassies.

From our point of view things become much more complex if another world only contacts our embassy. By doing so they given house Nehket a lot of power over the trades, and other houses suddenly have to make deals not only with their trade partner, but with house Nehket as well. This has even led to the introduction of new laws by the imperial council to try and limit the influence of the senatorial house, though his had mixed results, I think."

"I have heard that terraformation is a difficult topic with some worlds. What do you think of terraformation, merchant Aosen?"

The empress danced in silence for some time.

"It isn't that there aren't any technological solutions.", the empress whispered back. "It's a cultural thing."

"I accepted that I won't have any children a long time ago, but every once in a while I am remembered of it."

"Let's just dance some more", she softly said, "and switch the subject.", she added in an already happier voice.

"Of course." Dana said continuing to dance with the empress.

"Could you tell me why veolians use slaves? I'm curious to know the exact reason."

"The Hiocan society is technologie orientated. Cultures which focus on religion or nature might have problems with terraformation, but we do not. I see it a logical next step in the technological evolution.

Before the time of Choas an ancient race lived in the My'enru system and all three planets had natural live. But the planets where attacked and Ah'raks live support system was completely destroyed. We are making down payments to restore it to it's former glory with help of terraformation and maybe our moons will have natural live too in the future.

Lady Susri, what do you think about slaves?"

((OOC: It seems something went wrong as last week I already wrote this post :P))

"I think that they're very dangerous. Most slaves belong to powerful nobles, and wield that power with experience. Sometimes even with a viciousness that surpasses their masters.", lady Susri answered honestly. "Fortunately, maintaining a slave is an expensive proposition, so only the high nobility is capable of doing so. If this wasn't so, my life would be much more complicated."

"Why do you have only a single wife, merchant? From what I have heard, you are one of the most influential members of the Hiocan Society. Does that not attract more mates?"

The empress was happy to remain close to Dana as they danced.

"Of course. Though I think 'use' is not the correct verb to describe the situation nowadays. We maintain them. We do so because we have not yet found a way to be in two places at the same time. If I have to attend multiple things at the same time, my slaves will tend to some of those things for me, effectively allowing me to be in multiple places at the same time."

"Right now is a nice example. I am here, dancing with you. But I am also meeting with archduchess Nehket Sajjana halfway across the planet. She wished to negotiate some matters about the legal position of multi-world conglomerates within the Commonwealth, so my Shanora flew over to discuss the matter."

The empress kept close to Dana throughout her reply, still not bothering to keep up the appearance of appropriateness.

"Lady Susri, that is an interesting perspective on slaves. I have done business with miss Serrah and she is indeed quite skilled in making deals.

In the Veolian Commonwealth it might be normal to have multiple partners and a lot of children but within the Hiocan Society most people have a single partner and only a 2-3 children. There is a big difference between our cultures. Most prefer intellectual understanding between partner than physical contact.

How is your relationship with the other wives of Lord Susri?"

"I am on friendly terms with my husband's other wife. In the past we have had our differences, which lead to some friction within our family. But over time I have come to appreciate her presence and way of doing things. Sometimes she isn't as subtle as is necessary, but she does get her point across."

"What is the reason you would only want 2 or 3 children, merchant? Is it not more logical to try and have more children to ensure your family's continuity?"

"With 2 to 3 children the family's continuity is secured. A good education and spending quality time is important. With too many children the balance of work, nurturing and leisure will be disturbed. You can better take your time and do it good, it's that logical?

How many children do you have, Lady Susri?"

Lady Susri looked away for a moment.

"I must admit that I am a bit ashamed of the answer, merchant. I have only five children.", she responded after looking back. "I have been unfortunate in my duties as a wife. Two of my children were born deformed, and did not survive. On the bright side, I look forward to another son in eight months. And I still have many years to go."

"Merchant Aosen, I have heard that hiocans live long lives. I know that this could be considered rude, so feel free to ask the same question of me. May I ask how old you are?"

After a moment of silently continuing to dance Dana replied.

"But would an official representative not accomplish the same thing? A hired, free man or woman instead of a slave? Especially considering how controversial slavery is in the Union.

Also it's fairly simple to make a free person give that little bit of extra effort that increases the profit significantly. I can't think of a way to make a slave do that."

Dana smiled with an ironic look on her face.

"Then again I don't understand the principle of nobility either, so it may just be me."

"You misunderstand. Shanora isn't an unofficial representative, she is me. Her actions are my actions, and anything said or done to her is as if it was said or done to me. There is no way of sending someone hired by me to be me..."

As Dana told the empress she doesn't know of a way to make a slave give that little bit of extra effort, the empress simply smiled.

"Well, certainly paying them will not work. They can already get anything they want, after all, they are me."

"I found that proper motivation is only found by discovering what makes my belongings the happiest, and offering it to them regardless of their efforts. In doing so, they will discover what task they like to do the most, and put their efforts into that."

The empress shifted her hands a little and placed a little more distance between them, nearing something that could be called appropriate again.

"I don't know where to start explaining it to you, as there is no concept in Astrian history that resembles it as far as I am aware. Current events might change this though, as it seems that your world has united under a single individual."

"That is already quite some offspring you have already. Congratulation on your pregnancy, Lady Susri.

I am 98 so I still have quite some time to go. I am busy with my carrier, but I plan to have more children in the near future.

And as you suggest I shall return the age question back to you. May I ask how old you are?"

"Thank you."

"I am already 42 years old. And I plan on staying around for another 50.", she replied with a smile.

"Would you mind if we work our way towards the other side of the dance floor?", lady Susri phrased it as a question as she subtly indicated to direction where the empress is currently dancing.

((OOC: I had hoped to start working towards an ending of this thread -- it has been going on for 5 months now ^_^))

Merchant Aosen takes a look to the other side and he spots the empress.

"Ah, I see your point of interest."

He takes a good look around and then starts maneuvering them to the other side, calmly and elegant in the rhythm of the music.

Dana raised an eyebrow. "I find that hard to believe. No two people are the same. Only you have your memories and thought processes. It's what makes everyone unique.

And with all due respect, I don't think even you could get everything, your highness." She emphasized the word 'everything' and finished with a smile.

"I'm not sure what to think the Lord-Master, but the ACA claims to be a meritocracy. That daughter of his though..." Dana paused a second. "Talk about jail bait."

"I think that is mostly a matter of perspective. Over longer periods, you'll find that there are commone themes to the kinds of people you encounter.", the empress looked a little amused once more, seemingly finding some joke in her reply.

"Ah, and that's the thing, isn't it? I don't want everything, as I have a very simple goal in life.", the empress replied, "But what I was talking about were material consideration; those are not really a concern, making the things that can not be bought so much more precious."

"What is claimed, and what really is are two very different things.", the empress looked quizzical, "What is a jail bait?"
