((OOC: This thread is private to the Sundarian Federation and the Veolian Commonwealth.))

On Unity the Sundarian Federation had opted to procure a piece of land in the Diplomatic district, instead of making use for the available facilities in the Senate building. And although the Federation had offered a more then generous budget for the establishment of an Embassy, the Lady de Montrève had chosen to keep it stylish and classy, thus the Embassy was housed in a large Manor house and several smaller annexes in the Victorian style. This left sufficient ground for a large courtyard and a well kept garden, which offered a large variety of native Sundarian and other plant life.

For today's occasion the entrance was ornamented with both the Veolian and Sundarian banners and in the flagpost next the heraldy of the House of Montrève, the heraldry of Veolian Imperial family, flew high. On both sides of the red carpet leading towards the entrance, an honorguard of eight men and women, dressed in ceremonial robes, stood at ready to offer an honorary salute.

Waiting outside, near the entrance of the Embassy stood one small human figure, patiently waiting for the Empress and her entourage to make their way to her.

The hovercar carrying the Veolian empress came to a smooth stop, with the passenger door neatly aligned with the red carpet. The front door opened, and one of the announced two handmaidens got out of the vehicle to open the passenger door. A twi'lek woman stepped out of the car, and held out her hand to help out the empress.

The three made their way across the red carpet, empress in the lead, and the two other women following to her left and right. The handmaiden was notably alert about the honour guard. As the three arrived at the door, the twi'lek woman took a few extra steps to end up in front of the empress, between her and the figure near the entrance.

"My mistress expected to meet with Lady de Montrève", the twi'lek woman started at an angry tone, "but it seems it might be better she leave now, before this situation escalates."

This was not the reaction that Miss Alexandra Koniova, Lady de Montrève's personal aide, had anticipated nor did she have much experience with a delegation of this status and stature. So she was slightly startled and struggled for a moment to maintain a diplomatic posture, before she continued as per her instructions.

She inclined and bowed her head, whilst she courtesied with one knee almost touching the ground. " Your Imperial Majesty, " she started a little insecure, but her voice grew more firm as she continued, " Milady de Montrève bids you welcome to the Sundarian Embassy and hopes that you have had pleasant journey. If you and your entourage, " She said with a calming nod towards Tayu Shanora, " Would be so kind as to follow me to the salon where Milady awaits. "

Alexandra awaits a reply before looking up and turning around to guide the delegation in and make sure no incidents would happen, with the Embassy security or otherwise.

"Thank you miss Koniova", the veolian empress replied with just a hint of a smile, "I am sure that no slight was intended, and I will personally see to it that my overzealous slave is punished for her overly bold statement."

At the last remark, the face of the twi'lek woman clouded over. Clearly unhappy with the turn of events, she delicately stepped out of the way.

"Miss Koniova", the empress continued, "as per your mistress' request both of my handmaidens will register their personal arms before we enter."

Just before the empress finished her sentence, a second hooded woman got out of the hovercar and joined the group. She handed a datapad to the sundarian aide and said: "My sister carries exactly the same equipment." The datapad listed three weapons, two of which where clearly visible on their person: a high-grade side arm carried on the thigh, a military-grade vibrosword carried on the back, and bio-ceramic exoskeletons.

"If everything is in order, do lead the way. I look forward to meeting lady de Montrève.", the empress smiled at the sundarian woman.

The empress, her slave, and both handmaidens follow the aide into the embassy.

" Thank you, Your majesty, " Alexandra said as she rose and took the padd handed to her. She looked it over briefly and said: " This will do just fine, if you would please follow me. "

She then took the delegation, and two female members of the honorguard who closed the ranks, through the entrance and passed security, into the large foyer. This space was perhaps the most impressive room in the entire Embassy, if one would judge it purely by decoration, in the center stood a large round fountain which was enclosed by a double winged staircase, winding up to the higher floors all the way to the domed roof with large skylight. Strategically placed in niches or on the wall, where sculptures or paintings of characters that payed a role of importance in the history of the Sundarian people.

The delegation then continued passed the fountain and underneath the overlook, through a short hallway towards the salon, where Lade de Montrève stood waiting just outside the entrance to greet her guests.

" Your Imperial Majesty, welcome, " Lady Peinaili said as she while curtseying, " It is a pleasure and privilege to have you here with us. "

The Veolian empress followed the sundarian aide, the twi'lek woman walking demurely next to her.

After arriving at the salon, the empress gave a short nod to the sundarian senator.

"Lady de Montrève", she said with a warm voice, "it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. And although we might have gotten off on the wrong foot, we are willing to ascribe the slight at the front door to cultural differences and enjoy this afternoon of tea with you."

The empress entered the salon, and selected a comfortable chair to sit in. The twi'lek woman seemed to ignore the senator, and made a quick beeline to sit down on the floor next to the empress' chair. The twi'lek delicately sat down, clearly adhering to the seiza style. Once she sat down, she looked up at her mistress who, in reply, spoke a single word: "silence".

After the Sundarian senator sat down as well, the two handmaidens entered the room, expertly taking up positions that offered good visual coverage of all entries while being in those places that are easily ignored.

"As we were talking about cultural differences, I have to ask.", the Veolian empress started, "Is it the norm for Sundarian nobility to send a servant to receive high-placed guests, or am I sorely mistaken and does the lovely miss Koniova actually descend from high nobility? She certainly has an aptitude for diplomacy."

" Your imperial majesty has a keen eye for talent, " the Lady de Montrève answered, " as I agree that the young lady does seems to have a gifted knack for diplomacy. And while it not unheard off for Sundarian nobility to have their guests welcomed by servants, it is not the case today. While miss Koniova's duties do include some tasks one could assign to a servant, her position here is one befitting her station as the daughter of the Marquis of Lafrioye è Koniova. "

The Lady de Montrève took her time to explain some of the customs and traditions among the Sundarian Nobility, as the empress had expressed an interest and she wanted to confirm that her choice of sending the young lady instead of going herself, had indeed been right one.

" It is tradition among some of the Sundarian nobility to place their children in the service of other nobility such as myself, to receive education and training, whilst being away from home and in a new, different environment. It is believed that in this way the children might be better prepared for their tasks with the family after they come off age and their titles and first duties are bestowed upon them. As Miss Koniova is soon to come of age, I wanted give her a chance hone her skills and gain some experience in the playfields of diplomacy and politics.

Is there such a tradition among the Veolian nobility or do they have other ways to prepare and school their children for the tasks which follow from their titles and responsibilities? "

"I see.", the empress stated calmly.

"It seems that I have been grossly misinformed about her station, and I apologize for our initial reaction to lady Koniova's presence at our arrival. She did not deserve the attitude that was projected towards her by my property. As a token of my sincerity, I offer lady Koniova the satisfaction of personally disciplining my property."

The empress carefully observed the expressions of both lady de Montrève and lady Koniova.

The lady de Montrève smiled as she heard the disguised apology and the offered recompense if any grievance was caused or offense was taken. This was obviously a test of sorts and she turned her head after a nod towards the empress to observe Miss Koniova's reaction and action.

It took a while for Alexandra to process what she had just heard, the Empress, her Lady's guest, offered her to discipline her Twi'lek woman, whom the empress regarded as her property. She stood undeceive for a moment, unsure of the implications of this offer, and as to what her reaction would be, before she decided upon a course of action.

" I thank your imperial majesty for her kind gesture " She said with her voice becoming stronger as she resolved in her decision, " But I see no reason for a disciplinary action since no grievance was caused, our cultures and customs are different and these differences may sometimes result in a .. misunderstanding. "

Alexandra then looked directly at the Twi'lek woman and said to conclude: " Perhaps we should both be a little more careful to judge things to quickly, as things are not always what they seem to be. "

The twi'lek smiled up at the young sundarian woman, but kept silent.

"You are very forgiving, lady Koniova.", the veolian empress said, "A veolian lady of your station would have taken me up on my offer without hesitation."

The empress directed her attention toward the sundarian senator.

"We have to account for the fact that our children, usually around the ages of 14 to 16, might undergo the transformation into hemet. This entails violent outbursts of energy, usually while under a great deal of stress."

"To this end, we tend to keep our children enrolled in private schools or have their education looked after by private tutors. Of course, this by no means prevents accidents, as the education of our younger children is strongly oriented towards offering a challenging, competitive and at times slightly dangerous environment for them to flourish.

Once a child has become hemet, they will be sent to secondary school, or top-notch tutors are hired. Depending on House and family interests, this education is finished around the age of 50. Non-hemet parents of a hemet child usually petition their lord for sponsoring."

"The lower nobility will often arrange for their daughters to take up positions as ladies-in-waiting or aides to established noblewomen whilst their sons are taught the delicacies of business or war, enrol in one of the academies, or arrange for them to be taken up as apprentice by established masters.

The high nobility does not adhere to such simple forms, and will spend considerable time and effort to fit a custom curriculum to the talents and predisposition of their children. High nobility will certainly take into account their child's genetic make-up, and the genetic predisposition of possible matches when determining suitable educational venues."

The empress paused for a moment.

"But to get to the point: Our cultures might not differ that much, after all. The position of younger ladies-in-waiting is not only one of service. Tradition has it that a noblewoman is partly responsible for the education of the younger ladies-in-waiting, and from your explanation I surmise that this is the case for lady Koniova as well.

Because an unmarried lady-in-waiting will one day represent her husband and her family she has to practice many forms of formal interaction. Next to this she has to learn the intricacies of negotiation, and must learn to appreciate the delicacies and interests of other noblewomen if she is to do be successful."

The veolian empress glanced over at the sundarian aide, before returning her attention to lady de Montrève.

"I must admit that I am more than a little curious how the career of a young Sundarian noblewoman continues after being a lady-in-waiting. Does her family arrange for an advantageous marriage?"

" Alexandra, " Peinaili asked Miss Koniova, noticing the Empress' interest in her aide, " If you'd be so kind to check upon the refreshments, make sure they are in order and as requested. "

" Yes Milady, " Alexandra answered and she left with a curtsy. Peinaili de Montrève then gave the Empress her full attention once more, to provide an answer is some detail.

" Well, " she started,
" That would depend on the wishes and interests of the family in question. But generally such arrangements are indeed made. However there are some exceptions, which I shall adress in some further detail.

As your imperial majesty may well be aware, the Sundarian Nobility inherits via a so called adapted Semi-Salic law, which stipulates that firstly all male descendance is applied; but if all agnates become extinct, then the closest heiress (such as a daughter) of the last male holder of the property inherits, and after her, her own male heirs according to the Salic order. Meaning the eldest daughter only inherits if she has no (surviving) brothers.

Generally noble houses that have no male heirs will strife to marry their eldest daughter into another suitable noble house and thus effective merge their houses through marriage, as their lands and holdings are passed on via the daughter to her children; where noble houses with a secured succession through the male line generally leave more room to incorporate the wishes of their daughters, this may result in suitable marriage but it is not the only option. "

The Lady de Montrève concluded for the moment, " Does that answer your question, your imperial majesty? "

Picking up on the not-so-subtle dismissal of lady Koniova, the empress replied with unexpected honesty.

"Almost.", the empress replied.

"Based on the similarity of our cultures I surmise that lady Koniova does not have an arranged marriage in her immediate future as she is soon to come of age,and she would not have enough time to divide between her duties as your personal aide and preparations for her marriage.

Would I be correct in my assumption that House Koniova has already secured it's succession through the male line, and the lady Koniova's future is yet to be determined?

If so, given her obvious knack for diplomacy, I would furthermore conclude that House Koniova would very much like for her to continue her career as a diplomat?"

" Your imperial Majesty assumes correctly, " Peinaili responded to the remarks by the Veolian empress, " House Koniova has no problems providing stability to their line of succession, as such the chances of Miss Koniova having to inherit are very slim. Her father has thus given his daughter some leeway as to what should become of her future and she will be entitled to a generous stipend when she comes of age.

Like yourself and I, her diplomatic skills and desires have not gone unnoticed by her family, " the Lady de Montrève continued, " And she'll want to further her career, either in my service or elsewhere. With her father's blessing, and her own talents, I see ample opportunities.. "

The veolian empress took a moment to appreciate the information she was given, before replying.

"Even though she is very young, I see great potential in lady Koniova. Please allow me to explain what I have in mind, and what this would entail for the young lady.

I would very much like to contribute to her career, and I think it would greatly benefit her if she spent some time at the veolian imperial court. Not only does this allow her to become familiar with veolian customs, she will also have a working knowledge of the veolian government and, if she takes to it, the necessary influence at court to continue her career as a liaison between our two peoples.

Were she a veolian noble, I would ask her if she would like take a position as one of my ladies in waiting. Unfortunately, though our peoples have come to respect each other, it is just not acceptable that a non-hemet would be lady-in-waiting to an empress. Fortunately, there are other positions open to her.

I would ask her is she will consent to be my nijī prēmikā, which would roughly translate to 'close personal aide'. Her duties would include accompanying me to diplomatic meetings and negotiations. The position is clearly ranked below lady-in-waiting. But it would allow her access to intimate negotiations while excluding her of the more public duties of a lady-in-waiting.

And as my nijī prēmikā I could shelter her from the more vicious elements at court until she is ready to take them."

"Lady de Montrève", she finished, "with your approval, I would like to extend an invitation to lady Koniova to come to the veolian court. However, I have to confess that I am not entirely aware of the nuances and delicacies of Sundarian etiquette. So I would ask your advice in this matter."

"That would indeed be a large step to further her career your imperial Majesty," Peinaili replied after the Empress had made her offer, "And I'm honored that you would consider her for it. As for any advice I can provide... "

The Lady de Montrève paused for a moment to consider the various options and the usual proceedings before she continued. This would probably mean that she'd have to look for a new personal aide, since Alexandra would be a fool to refuse, but that small discomfort was worth the praises of the Veolian Empress and the obvious benefits for her own standing with the Sundarian Nobility. After all not everyone could say to have taught the nijī prēmikā of the Veolian Empress, getting a suitable replacement would not be a problem.

"Your imperial Majesty, if this is indeed your wish, then the actions we should take are twofold." Peinaili stated, "Firstly I would ask you to discuss the proposal with Miss Koniova herself, so that she may form her own opinion and ask any questions she should have. If it then appear that she willing to fulfill the position we should ask her father's permission, which, in my honest opinion, should be no problem."

"Very well. I shall discuss this with her after my return from my negotiations with the Slave Rebellion. In the meantime, it might be useful if you discussed this option with lady Koniova as well; I do not wish to impose on you by my sudden interest.

It might also be good for the young lady to gain some insight into the veolian culture before I speak with her on the matter. I do not wish to create a diplomatic incident, and though our cultures seem alike I think that some things are very different."

"An excellent suggestion indeed your Imperial majesty," Peinaili replied, "I shall discuss your request with Miss Koniova and if her reply is positive, arrange for Miss Koniova to receive furhter education in the Veolian Culture, etiquette and customs to better prepare her. Perhaps Lady Khaw Jikena, Mister Pendra's fiancee, might be willing to offer some help in this matter.

Speaking of Mister Pendra," The Lady de Montrève continued as she switched the topic of their conversation slightly, "It is the wish of the Sundarian government to appoint a permanent ambassador to Veolia, in order to further strengthen the cooperation that already exists between our separate factions. It is my opinion that, given his engagement with Lady Khaw Jikena and his diplomatic qualities, Mister Pendra could make for a suitable candidate. The Sundarain government would like opinion of the Veolian Commonwealth on this matter, but I would also prefer to hear your Imperial majesty's thoughts and opinion."

"First off, the Veolian Commonwealth would be honoured to reciprocate this gesture. Though I will ask lady Nehket Aeka to handle the negotiations on the extent of extraterritoriality and other details related to such an exchange."

The empress smiled as lady de Montrève mentioned the candidate.

"As you asked for my personal opinion, I will tell you what I think of it as well. Though I do not doubt the diplomatic qualities of mister Pendra, I do not think that his current engagement makes him a suitable candidate. It would very be awkward for lady Khaw Jikena to negotiate on his, and therefore the Sundarian Fededration's, behalf. To the Veolian people, assigning mister Pendra will look as if he were just a puppet for house Khaw.

Seeing how mister Pendra is not of noble blood, he will have a lot to prove to the veolian people. My husband's word will carry weight in his favour, but this will not be enough. To be a suitable candidate, mister Pendra will have to come into his duties from a clear position of importance."

" We would be honored to receive an ambassador of the Veolian Commonwealth," Peinaili responded, "And we shall discuss the necessary arrangements at a later time.

" That is the reason I asked, " The Lady de Montrève replied after she had heard the opinion of the Empress, " Since I anticipated minor problems depending on cultural differences. How would your Imperial Majesty suggest that we solve this issue? "

"The easiest solution would be to appoint another, preferably an established nobleman of high station. That way, he will clearly be seen as a representative of his people."

"However, if mister Pendra is to assume the position of ambassador, this would be my advice: as he is not of noble blood, he must draw his importance from another aspect. Raising his house to nobility would seem conceited.

The best course of action would be for mister Pendra to marry two high-born sundarian noblewomen. The daughters of a marquis and a duke would suit him well; it is preferable that they are exceedingly attractive, and at least one of them a little older than mister Pendra. This will make it seem as if he is a superb genetic specimen.

From a veolian perspective, clearly no noble house would marry such a desirable daughter to a non-noble youngster if he did not have impressive natural qualities. They would also lend him credibility, as he will be perceived as being capable to negotiate not one, but two marriage contracts to women that are far above his station. And he will not be seen as a puppet of house Khaw, as his sundarian wives would outrank and outnumber lady Khaw Jikena."

Suddenly, the veolian empress audibly laughed out.

"Oh dear, I just realized. Given the monogamous nature of noble marriages in the Sundarian culture, this would mean that mister Pendra not only seems to be a master negotiator, he will have to be one to secure the consent of both ladies...

Maybe my advice is not as useful as I had hoped.", the empress said with a hint of disappointment in her face.

"I see, " the Lady de Montrève simply answered in response to the Empress' suggestion, "Mister Pendra would indeed be a true master of negotiation were he to manage this feat. Because not only is your imperial majesty correct that monogamous relationship are the norm with the Sundarian Culture, especially within the ranks of Nobility, it will be hard keep the respect and goodwill of the populace should Mister Pendra indeed be sent to represent them as ambassador.

Then there is the problem of finding 2 noblewomen, per your recommendation, that are willing to not only share their husband with each other, but also with a third. Finding to 2 women to marry the same man, though rare, does happen when said women are twins; but the acceptance of a third wife will prove extremely difficult and may have far stretching consequences.

So it would probably be best to either find another reason for Mister Pendra to prove himself worthy of the position, or I'd take up your imperial Majesty's first suggestion and look for another suitable candidate amongst the Sundarian Nobility which would be willing to take up the post of ambassador."

"If one come to think about it, it is indeed a bit of strange case," the Lady de Montrève answered, "I shall elaborate a bit more on this matter so that your Imperial Majesty may better understand the specifics surrounding this occurrence.

I know of one precedent, which occurred some 230 years ago, where a member of the Sundarian Nobility courted the daughter of a duke, Andra, who had an identical twin sister named Juli. Both sister were extremely close and the bond between them was so strong that they could hardly stand being separated for longer periods of time. Nevertheless the young nobleman asked Andra's hand in marriage and they moved to their new estate.

At first thins seemed to be just fine and Andra's was slowly adapting to her new situation, however over she did grow more weary and showed signs of a depression, were as her sister Juli, who back home, showed the same signs for no apparent reason. Eventually Andra's husband, sought contact with her father to remedy the situation, since with an unhappy wife, he himself was not happy.

Eventually, after a long and difficult negotiation in which both sisters first convinced their father, the young nobleman agreed to marry Juli as well, so that both of them would no longer be separated and their depression faded. Rumor has it that this young man was one of the luckiest and most happy in this period of our history.

Since this case there have been several other cases where identical twin sister married the same man under simular circumstances, which lead to popular belief that the bond that exists between identical twin sisters is so strong that they should not be separated, and are thus best kept together even when it comes to marriage."

"It seems that there exists little negotiation room for mister Pendra. Unless he were able to find a pair of unmarried higborne twins, negotiate a marriage, and somehow find them willing to accept lady Khaw Jikena as a sister. Something which, given your explanation, might very well prove impossible."

The empress' face slowly turned into a smile.

"I still think that the best solution, from a Veolian perspective, is for mister Pendra to marry. However, it might be possible to put up a ruse. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that two or three daughters of high nobility are found willing to participate in a diplomatic mission to the Veolian Commonwealth.

Then we make it clear that they are not married, for example by consequently using their family name in public announcements, and mister Pendra will ask these ladies to negotiate on his behalf. This way, since mister Pendra asks them to negotiate on his behalf, and they are clearly not his sisters, it will be assumed that these ladies are somehow attached to mister Pendra. Especially if lady Khaw Jikena sees the use of such a ruse, which I'm sure she will.

Of course, this whole ruse hinges on the fact that mister Pendra's aides are both capable and desirable. Mister Pendra might even be the better for it, as it would add to his reputation that he has a following of noblewomen that really ought to marry to high nobility...

Though mister Pendra will probably have to outsmart a few hemets that try to steal away one of his 'paramours', being successful in this would greatly add to his reputation as a very capable man. Of course, after a year or five it doesn't really matter any more, as people will have grown accustomed to the situation.

Might such a ruse work?"

"Hmm.. ," Peinailli said as she considered the latest proposal from the Empress, "I understand the Veolian views upon the importance of marriage as it clearly signifies mister Pendra's position and status and I will look into the matter and discuss it with Mister Pendra.

She then continued to discuss the proposal to appointed several highborn noblewomen to serve as a special envoy to the Ambassador and negotiate on his behalf, which would solve a large part of the current cultural problems since mister Pendra was not of noble blood.

"I suspect however that the proposed ruse, as your imperial majesty so adequately calls it, would take considerably less effort and might very well achieve the same result. Though I suspect mister Pendra will need some convincing, I do believe that such an arrangement might work, and I'm sure we can find some noblewomen of sufficient stature willing to fulfill the position of special envoy to the Sundarian Ambassador of the Veolian Commonwealth and negotiate on his behalf.

It would prove a good position of importance to these ladies and offers some of Sundarian's more active noble houses a chance to contribute to trade negotiations and other sorts of agreements. Which in turn will provide more stability within the Sundarian Government. I shall discuss the matter with High Lord Yllia and ask for his opinion on this matter and then perhaps we can offer a short list of candidates for your personal review in a little while."
