IC advertisement banners!

Right-o, so Mercury had this cool idea about two years ago to put the banners you can see in the top-right of the site on the wiki. I have implemented this!

In this post I'll explain what you need to do to get your banner working. If you have any questions, fire away!

Banner Campaigns

To get your own banner campaign going, the only thing you need to do is put the following data block somewhere on the wiki, and fill it in:
Code: Select all
<data banner_campaign>
Banner [image]      :
Link [page]         :
Title               :
User [ref::user]    :
Start [date]        :
End [date]          :
</data>

I'll shortly walk through the different things you need to fill in:
  • Banner: an image that you uploaded to the wiki. This image should have the exact size of a banner image (described below).
  • Link: The wiki page you want to link to. If you want to link to a forum thread (for a limited-duration offer for example), you have to replace the 'page' with 'forum' and provide a thread id like you would normally do when adding a thread to a story page. For example, use Link [forum]: 100.
  • Title: The text that appears if people hover over the banner with their mouse.
  • User: Fill in your username here, just like you do for new corporations or characters. This is used by the banner system to be fair when deciding what banner to show.
  • Start: The start date of the banner campaign in the YYYY-MM-DD format. If you want to start immediately, simply fill in the current date.
  • End: The end date of the banner campaign in the YYYY-MM-DD format. If you leave this out, the campaign will run forever (which will eventually bore people :P)

Corporation Banners

If you have a corporation, you can add the Banner [image] field to it, and automatically get your corporation in the banner rotation!

Note that the banner will link to the corporation page. Banner specs can be seen below.

(Because the banner information for the Zero and One corporation was for testing purposes only, I have updated those two corporate pages.)

Banner Image Specs

Banners should be uploaded to the wiki, and be 468 pixels wide and 60 pixels high. If the banner has a different size, it will look comically deformed.

Some examples:

Try to make the images fit in the theme of the site. A wildly colourful image is nice for a temporary campaign, but if we have to see them all the bloody time, I'm going to implement an 'opt out' functionality for everyone ^_^

This styling advice comes from the venerable Regarding the banners thread:
Mercury wrote:If you wish to advertise, please send a banner in .png format at 468px × 60px. Please try to keep in the general style of the site and don't make the colours too obtrusive ^_^. Also, no animations of any kind. Finally, I need an url to link the banner to and a mouse-over text (not too long).

Naturally all banners should be IC only.

Old Banner Cleanup

I put all active banner campaigns into the wiki. The only two people that need to care about that are Elmer and me. Our campaigns are now on our factions' respective bookkeeping pages. They don't need to stay there, but I needed a place that is easily findable.

The extremely old banners in the http://www.fwurg.net/images/banners/ directory are no longer used. I will leave them there since they form a good collection of examples.

Note: I just discovered and fixed the banners in one of the tools. If you notice a page that has no banner while you think it ought to have one, please post it here.

You mean 60 pixels high and 468 pixels wide?

Also, cool feature.

Yes. That is exactly what I meant -- and through the power of retroactive changes, it is also what I wrote >_>

You can also link to a forum topic, instead of a wiki page... Instead of getting a rather empty wiki page you can have people reply immediately :P

Also, try to make the images fit in the theme of the site. A wildly colourful image is nice for a temporary campaign, but if I have to see this all the bloody time, I'm going to implement an 'opt out' functionality for everyone ^_^

The styleing decree (from ancient thread):
Mercury wrote:If you wish to advertise, please send a banner in .png format at 468px × 60px. Please try to keep in the general style of the site and don't make the colours too obtrusive ^_^. Also, no animations of any kind. Finally, I need an url to link the banner to and a mouse-over text (not too long).

You no longer need to send in a banner, but please exercise some constraint on colours and styling. (I'll add this statment by Mercury to the original post)

The whole point was to make it bloody neon in your face :P It will be there for 20 weeks (to coincide with the phase out time of the Daryan trades ) ;)

I was serious about the styling. 20 weeks is a bloody long time. Please fix it, or I'll have to get coding on the opt-out system T_T

The easiest would be to tone it down a bit, right? I did the same to the PURGATORY campaign -- simply dim the neon background so it blends with the site's theme and you're set :)
