Privacy, European Cookie Laws and FWURG

From today, the Dutch law enforces the new European Cookie laws, which forbid "Tracking Cookies". "Cookies" are small files placed on your computer by your browser, as part of the normal use of the internet. "Tracking cookies" are a special kind of cookies that are used by various companies to track your browsing behaviour, using that to build a profile of how you visit certain sites and what other sites you visit, and then use that profile to offer you personalised advertisements.

The Fwurg site does make use of cookies. The cookies used by the Fwurg site are used to store your 'session', specifically to ensure you do not need to log in every time you want to post on the forum or edit the wiki. Our cookies are NOT tracking cookies - we do not store information about what pages you visit on the website, nor do we track what other websites you use. The cookies we use are necessary for technical reasons to allow you to stay logged in on our website.

Actually, Fwurg does not track your use of our site at all - with or without cookies. Because it is necessary to solve any technical problems with the site that may arise, it is possible for our administrators to see from what IP address you used Fwurg, but neither we nor anyone else (besides you) knows what pages you visited or when. Keep in mind however that if you make posts on the forum or edit pages on the wiki, your username and the time of your edit is stored - this information is visible to everyone, including yourself.

Finally Fwurg contains In Character advertisement in the top right corner of the screen. These banners advertise messages by players and non-player-characters about the game world. They are selected completely at random (not based on what pages you visit) and are all hosted locally, so no advertisement agency can see what banners you clicked on (in fact: even we don't know what banners you do or do not click!). If you do not wish to see any banners, you can block the http://fwurg.xs4all.nl/images/banners directory in your AdBlocker - this will prevent any banners from showing up.

In short, we take your privacy seriously: we do not track your use of the site and we limit the information we collect about you to your account information, the posts and edits you make, and some necessary technical information. As a result, Fwurg already complies fully with the new Cookie laws.

If you have any questions or idea's about cookies, privacy or our advertising policy, please feel free to post here!

I would like to point out the HTTP server we use actually stores (ip, url) lines for every request.
