Holonet nodes have a capacity of 500, and a range of 1 (:hex). Does this mean a node can send up to 500 (:tradecap) into neighboring systems, but has unlimited receiver capabilities?

The capacity means the total amount of (proper type of) goods that can be transported through that specific sector. In other words, if you have a Holonet node and your neighbour does not, you cannot send goods to them, as they do not have access.

The capacity of the Holonet node is the sum of incoming, outgoing and traversing traffic. Simple example.

Suppose two players in the same (:hex) are trading 100 information for 150 research. The capacity used by the Holonet node is 250 (100 + 150).

Complex example:

Suppose three players A, B and C are in three sectors in a row in alphabetical order. Player A trades 100 information for 150 research of player C and player B trades 100 information for 100 entertainment with player A.

In this case, sector A and B both need a capacity of 450 and sector C needs a capacity of 250.

Does this clarify the matter?

It does. Holonet trading requires a little more capacity than I thought it would, but with a free initial capacity of 500, it looks like I'll be okay for at least two months. :)
