[Chancellor Dewa Lanadi]

"Fellow senators", the young veolian started.

"It seems that with the end of this week drawing nearer, and with it the deadline for electoral candidates to announce themselves, no one has come forward to take up the mantle of the office of the Chancellor of the Union.

The Union laws are silent on the matter. What happens when no one steps forward to take up the burden of office?"

She looks around the senate, especially at those senators that have served as chancellor before.

"I did not plan on running for the position of chancellor. Nor have I campaigned towards this goal, or even ensured that my candidacy will be seconded.

I have no running mates. I have no political platform on which to base my candidacy, other than preventing the Union from entering a state of leaderlessness."

"As no one else steps forward to guide the Union forward, I feel it is my duty to do so. To those of you who do not wish to see our Union of free worlds adrift without guidance, I say this: Second my candidacy, and support my run for chancellor!"

"Fellow Senators and representatives,

We of the Kingdom of Meritonia feel that it is indeed not wise to have our fair Union without a clear leader. I will therefore second the candidacy of Senator Dewa Lanadi, in favour of running for the office of Chancellor myself as I do not directly aspire that position."

"We should not let the Union fall back into chaos.

On behalf of the Praetorian Empire I second the candidacy of Senator Dewa Lanadi in her run for chancellor."

"Thank you.

With my candidacy now seconded, I am required by law to seek out two senators to be my running mates. These senators will become ministers in my cabinet. Often, the running mates are those who second the candidacy, but this is not required by law.

Because of the situation, I will simply and openly ask the senate: who among you want to be my running mates for the upcoming election, and help guide the Union?"

"It would be a pleasure and a privilege to run with you, Senator. That is if you would let me of course."

[Chancellor Dewa Lanadi]

"Thank you, senator Enrorgh, for being willing to help guide the Union."

"Unfortunately, unless someone else steps up as running mate, my candidacy will not be legal. Surely someone in this room is willing to take up the burden of leadership?"

"The Astai Republic views Senator Dewa Lanadi as a fine choice for chancellor of the union. It would be an honour to work as your running mate."

"I am happy to welcome senator Enrorgh of the Kingdom of Meritonia and senator Atheos of the Astai Republic as my running mates during this election. And I look forward to working with them to guide the Union into the future."

Dewa Lanadi looks around the senate, her veolian-styled dress subtly shifting in the light.

"As I said before, I had no plans to run for the position of chancellor, nor did I have a platform to run on. Yet, now that I am here, before the senate, as the only candidate, I feel that there must be a fresh change."

"Taking up the duties of the chancellor or the duties of a minister should be something of importance, something to strive towards. These positions come with great responsibility, yet their value is barely acknowledged within the senate, as evidenced by the lack of enthusiasm for the elections."

"Going forward, I plan on working to improve the situation of the chancellor and the ministers. I plan to re-envision these positions of great import and responsibility and to make sure that their work is acknowledged, and that the weight of the responsibilities they take on is appropriately balanced."
