The rain hadn't been much of a bother to Nathan. His metal body didn't rust and Marine Boot camp had made mud seem like a gift from the Goddesses.

Just like it made him more comfortable sleeping on hard wet ground, waking up before first light and going for heavy exercise without breakfast than sleeping in a soft bed, sleeping in and enjoying warm meals three times a day.

When the woman called for them Nathan first joined his fists at his knuckles and looked up. Like that he offered a quick silent prayer to the stars, asking them to help him remain vigilant.

"Okay then. Let's go." He said, now being ready to get going. Finding a branch that could hold him, he jumped up to it. He assumed his combat boots would have enough grip not to slip of the branch.

((OOC: Ariana automatically succeeds her check because her species has Natural Flight. Nathan's jump check using Force Jump is approved.))

The challenge for Ariana was trivial - with her wings, she easily lifted herself up towards the branches, even though she had to pick some leaves from her face afterewards. It had got her up here easily, but from here flight would not be possible - too many leaves.

Nathan jumped up after her, landing on the surface of the branch which was covered in moss.

On the branches, both the Jedi had trouble keeping their balance, but the bare feet of the woman did not wait for them, running off over the branches and jumping from one to another as if it was a convenient escalator in a shopping mall where shoes were on sale.

Racing past the countless trees as if they were slow shoppers blocking the route, the duo of Jedi chased after her for what seemed like forever, in the meanwhile taking in a landscape that they had never seen before.

Here, the world had no floor but the branch you walked on, and only the lack or abundance of light could tell you if you were high or low in the canopy. Vines formed a highway of ziplines and sometimes the floor caved out from under you.

But what was most surprising wasn't the flora. It was the fauna - this forest was full of it with different alien lifeforms securing their place on different levels of the canopy.

The woman showed them the creatures that had assaulted them last night, four-eyed monkeys with twin tails and strange limbs made for brachiation. Seeing them for real gave quite a different impression than what the infra-red had suggested, turning them from annoying into wonderful creatures who were trying to feet their little children.

Image

Guiding them through the forest, she introduced them to flowers that pulsated in ten thousand different colours, insects the size of a man's arm and small multi-armed amphibians that sang in the most beautiful of three-voiced harmonies.

She even took them to see gigantic creatures that walked the "open rivers" as she described them, though they were more accurately described as overgrown rivers, with gigantic trees spanning out over them, casting them into the same shadow of the canopy that all of the planets surface was subject to.

Standing at least 30 meters tall, with long, slender limbs that could not possibly support their massive bodies and heads, they spent day and night eating entire tree branches, causing the sun to shine in with new plants racing to fill the void that they had left. If this planet was fighting a war for the light, these creatures were surely the long range artillery, indiscriminately culling the warriors, but never capable of beating the never ending stream of infantry.

Image

They chased through the jungle all day, seeing things they had never seen before in all their travels through the galaxy, one more amazing than the other. From the sky this had seemed like a boring world with just trees to keep them company... how different it was up close.

And finally she took them to the highest part of the canopy where the branches could still support them, settling down there as the sun was lowering itself, getting ready to start setting in an hour or so. Here she finally halted, smiling warmly at them as she balanced herself precariously on the end of a bending branch, motioning for the Jedi to do the same.

"There are many beautiful creatures here. I am impressed."

Ariana moved onto another branch and spreads her wings for the balance. She starts to move to the end of the branch but halted half way to make sure that the branch wouldn't break at her weight. When she halted she lay down on the branch and looked at the sunset. After a while she picked some food out of her backpack and started eating.

After eating a few bites Ariana stopped.

"This was a busy day. We have seen the forest and its inhabitants now with our own eyes. Can you tell us about your unique force power? "

Nathan was hesitant to move further away from the tree trunk. He wasn't sure if the outer edge of the branch could handle his massive weight. Not that he was fat, he was just made of metal and metal is heavy.

Deciding to trust the Force he went further out toward the end of the branch, crouching to have better balance.
((Check: 9 = 5 Force Level + 4 Fitness -- keeping balance))

He saw Ariana eat something and thought that it was convenient he didn't need to eat for at least another week. One of the perks of being a cyborg.

"Ariana, show some respect." Nathan replied to her question. "Do you really think that was just a tour trough the forest?"

((OOC: Your balance checks are approved.))

The woman looked wide-eyed at Ariana, with no small measure of disgust at seeing her eating the rations from the ship.

"Do not eat that..." she condescendingly told Ariana while making a face, as if Ariana were a 2 year old that should not put random objects in her mouth "... you don't know what it has been." - for a moment, the two Jedi might guess they had misheard, but they were pretty certain she had said 'what' it has been rather than 'where'.

She smiled at Ariana's question - and Nathan's response to it.

"It has indeed been a busy day." she finally acknowledged. "So our next activity will be a lot more quiet." she explained without ever answering the question.

"I'd like you both to watch that tree..." she motioned to a nearby tree "... and to watch it very carefully and closely until it is too dark to see it any more." That'd be at least an hour and then a little bit more.

Ariana continues to eat since she doesn't know what to do with the remark the woman made.

"What is the purpose of these activities? I want to know what we are learning from it and why. We are already patiently following you for two days now..."

Ariana did not know how to respond to these tests and still did not know why they were here.

She uses the following time to rest and looks at the tree since there is not much else to do.

Nathan decided to ignore Ariana and do as the woman told, half expecting the woman to beat down the Preatorian for whining like a spoiled brat.

Instead he started staring at the tree and kept an open mind for anything he might learn.

((OOC: You cannot use stealth for looking at a tree. I therefore use 9 as your total score. Unfortunately, this does not reveal anything.))

"Ssshh!" the woman told Ariana with no small level of annoyance. "Just watch very carefully..."

Giving up, the two Jedi stared silently at the tree. For two hours...

Nathan didn't move a synthetic muscle in his body as he stared at a tree. He looked more like a statue than a person when he did that.

A bird even went to sit on his head. He wouldn't have bothered to chase it off, where it not for the fact that the bird had apparently decided that his head was the perfect spot to build it's nest. So he shook it off, but unfortunately the bird was persistent. So it tried again and again and again, until when the bird approached for the umpteenth time Nathan plucked it out of the air before he let it go after a few seconds. It didn't try again.

Al the while he kept staring at the tree. An activity that was surprisingly calming if a bit difficult when a bird was trying to build a nest on your head.

Ariana decided that she had done enough for today, the woman was not going to tell them anything it seemed.

Ariana kept one eye focused on the tree and closed her other eye. Instead of focusing all her attention on the tree she curled up and rested her body.

Ariana did not tell the others that she was going to rest, it would probably aggravate them more, she decided that this puzzle was Nathans problem.

For two hours they stared - or relaxed with their eyes closed - until the sun had long gone down and everything had gone dark.

"What did you see...?" the woman asked, oddly enough as if curious to hear the answer as well.

"Well I saw some small creatures of on the tree running around. Nothing special I would say."

Ariana waited for a moment.

"You are probably pointing at the fact that the leaves of this tree are growing remarkably fast. You can actually see the new leaves in the top of the tree in only a few hours.

Can you tell us what we are actually here for now?"

((OOC: Elmer told me that the actual image of the tree was the hint. After looking specifically at the image again I noticed that it was a gif... To be honest if Elmer would not have told me I would never have looked at the image as if it was a clue, normally these images only illustrate the scenery. If your idea was to hide a IC clue in a OOC illustration I have to say that it was confusing.))

((OOC: I regret nothiiiiing! On a more serious note, it was deliberately vague and the clue needn't be picked up in order to proceed, but kuddo's for noticing, Elmer ^_^))

"You -did- see it! Very good!" the woman complimented Ariana like a small child who put the round peg into the correct hole. "You did not see it..." she sighed when Ariana asked why they were actually here.

She closed her eyes and thought silently for a while.

Finally she spoke, confirming the Jedi's hope that she hadn't fallen asleep and taking a different approach this time: "Perhaps you look too much with your eyes and not enough with your mind... Close your eyes and concentrate on everything I showed you... on everything you've encountered. What have you learned about the forest so far?"

"The tree is alive." Nathan plainly stated. "As is the forest, ever changing, the young building on the old. Always moving forward never stopping."

He looked at the woman.

"Is that the answer your looking for?"

"The force is strong here. Did you stimulate the growth of the tree using the force?"

Ariana closed her eyes for a few seconds and sensed the force around her.

"What you say is true, cyborg - you are more open than the reptile." the woman acknowledged. "Though your answer is still far from the entirety of what I wanted to convey..."

She turned to Ariana "I did not use the Force to grow those leaves... The tree did that all on its own. It is powerful that way."

She took a moment to think things over, remaining quiet for at least twenty minutes.

20 minutes later

"Your bodies are here, but your mind is still in the city." she finally began speaking again.

She looked to Ariana, then to Nathan.

"You call it the Force, but the name you give to it is a lie. For you it is not a Force with which you can interact. It is a tool that you use to accomplish your goals."

She paused again, seeming to gage their reactions.

"You seem to think I asked you here to teach you a trick. That I will tell you to do a mysterious dance and to say certain mystical words so that a special magical effect will happen. You want me to write a new page for your manual, to build an extension to make the Force a better tool."

She sighed

"I have no such tricks to teach you. Nothing you can 'use' in the way that you want..."

She paused a moment.

"Perhaps it is time you went home..."

Nathan was a patient man by nature, but even his patience had a limit. One that was now rapidly approaching.

It ran out the moment the woman suggested they go home.

"With all due respect, ma'am, but perhaps the problem doesn't lay with us." He said, slithers of frustration penetrating his voice.

"I came to this planet on a mission to learn. I'm a marine and I don't leave until my mission is completed.

You have shown us many things on this planet and told us to pay more attention to our surroundings. Well all I've seen is that this forest is filled with life, living in and around other life. Despite the fact it looks deserted from the air and from the ground."

Nathan continued with an accusing tone.

"If you say we need to interact with the Force than teach us how to!"

"You are right..."

The woman seemed to have taken their words to heart. For all the way she talked to them as children, at least now she took seriously what the two Jedi were saying and her tone of voice reflected this.

"When you came here I thought you both very foolish. Like children. So I taught you as I would teach children...

She looked at Ariana

"You ask me to explain what you should do... but that is the point... there is nothing I can tell you that you must do. No list or rules or set of steps to take.

A city is planned out. There are hundreds of buildings, each with a place of their own, put there by people with a purpose. Someone put it there.

Everything in your world is like that, from the way you got here to the weapons you carry down to your very bodies" she indicated Nathan "It is made for a reason... with a purpose."

She paused a moment again.

"What do you think is the purpose of this tree? What is the purpose of the large river-walkers?"

she seemed to want to hear an answer from them on that.

"Do you think there is a designer who made the rainbow flower? An artist who wrote the songs of the singing salamander? An architect who planned the arm-length insects?

Do you think the monkeys held a plan beyond 'get easy food' when they visited you last night?"

She looked at Nathan.

"When you chased them off, you seemed to understand that, so I wanted to show you more...

The fact is, nothing here has a purpose. Nothing was designed. Nobody here has deep multi-layered plans.

And I do not have those either."

She looked back to Ariana.

"I have not given you any puzzles at all... All I did was show you things... and I hoped that by showing, you would come to understand."

I thought you foolish children... But you are not children. And you aren't foolish. Just... very very different. And very much in a world you do not understand."

She paused

"And a world that apparently does not understand you either. I have not been understanding of you... and that is perhaps as much the cause of me being unable to teach you as your inability to understand me."

"I am sorry for being so short with you.

I don't think that nature is designed. I believe that it is based on balance and natural selection. The strong species survive because they fulfill a purpose that maintains the balance.

I agree that I am not used to nature as it is here. I did learn about many different species these days."

The woman nodded

"And not just see... feel. Everything here is alive... life coming in so many shapes and sizes that you cannot imagine it all. If you learn anything from the trip let it be that...

You know how to live in the city, where everything is either dead or people. I wish you knew how to live in the forest. How to live in the marshes, the canopies the rivers. How to live in a place that is alive.

Perhaps I've been able to give you at least a little insights though...? What animal do you believe you are most like?" she inquired.

"I would like to learn that, how to live in a place that is alive." Nathan replied. "I think I'm like a wolf or a dog."

"Everywhere is my home." the woman explained to Ariana "I stay wherever I want, I sleep when I want to... I do not need to synchronise my activity with anyone... but I think I am more connected with the other life here than people in the city who do make sure to do the same things at the same time every day. You act in unison, but you rarely interact. It is a really unnatural way of living. I wish you could feel the connection..."

She looked to Nathan. Focussing on his surroundings and letting the woman guide his focus, the Jedi was overwhelmed by the energy of all the life around him. Everything in every direction seemed to be filled with the Force, making it impossible to pick out anything in particular, except for himself and Ariana, who stood out like bright red fruit on a green plant.
