The Misty Voyage, carrying Nathan and Ariana, set course for the landing zone immediately after arrival. It's twin, the Parable Defence, closely following. Their surprise arrival, combined with the fighter escort ensured that both transports safely arrived at the landing zone. The Phantoms were already waiting for the Jedi in the hangar bay, speeders standing by.

As the hangar bay doors opened and the ramp lowered, the two jedi saw the mist settle around the ramp like a lazy (and very malleable) pillow. Starting up the speeders, the Jedi and the phantoms headed out into the swamp. Luckily, they had a map of the place, or the mist and the landscape would have easily allowed them to get lost.

Racing through the swamp, the Jedi noticed that the landscape around them consisted of large trees with multiple canopy layers, and large amounts of vines hanging down into the water. On the small hills protruding from the watery surface, large colonies of ferns and tall grasses blocked their sight. Given the speed with which their speeders were going, they couldn't spare their surroundings much more than a passing glance, as most of their concentration was bound up in preventing a nasty collision with a tree or a tangle of vines.

As they sped along the landscape in formation, Nathan suddenly lost control of his speeder. His Jedi reflexes allowed him to jump aside just in time, but his speeder wasn't as lucky. It's nose took a dip into the swamp decelerating fast with the rest of the speeder flipping overhead and smashing into a tree with a load explosion.

As the others were way behind him they had time to slow down. But as they neared the place where Nathan crashed, their speeders started drifting as well. It was clear that something was affecting the speeders, but what or why?

"This must be the radiation that we were told about. We will have to leave the speeders here and continue on foot to the dig site. Phantom, what is our current location? How long does it take us to get there at walking speed?"

Ariana parked her speeder on firm soil next to a tree. She waited for the others and continued on foot.

Nathan dusted himself off and took a second to reorientate himself. He checked his radiation detector.

Then he ran a diagnostic on his body to make sure whatever was messing with the speeders didn't also affect him. While his cybernetics were built to withstand most things that could mess with electronics it didn't hurt to make sure.

"All units maintain radio silence."

Nathan double timed it to the others. "Every one check your gear, make sure what happened to the speeders doesn't happen to other things as well."

Nathan quickly determined that he wasn't directly affected, but that his internal orientation sensor was giving off some weird readings. It didn't affect his orientation, but it felt a little weird, as if the area's gravity was changing while he stood still. However, as his cybernetics were created to handle such weirdness, he easily corrected the problem.

Not finding anything else that stopped working other than the speeders, and not wasting any time investigating what made the speeders break down, the two Jedi and the reconnaissance squad continue their journey towards the dig site.

On foot, their path led them wading through water, and finding ridges of solid ground to follow. They encountered numerous forms of wildlife. Most just ignored the Jedi, but some fled at the sight of them. After roughly two hours of double-timing it, they arrived at the dig site.

The dig was easily recognizable as it was clearly located on some kind of island featuring higher ground and clifs. Luckily, a wide natural ramp was available for the jedi to ascend onto the plateau. On the plateau, they found a small camp made up of temporary housing, a generator, lighting poles, a communication array and three watch towers. As soon as they arrived on the plateau, they spotted an old hiocan walking towards them. He was flanked by two hiocan guards.

"Greetings Jedi", the old man held up his hand in greeting, "I am professor Komian. It is good to see you. Please, follow me." He led the small group into the camp and to largest tent. As the Jedi walked into the tent, they saw an enormous crystal! The clear blue crystal was hovering about half a meter above the ground, with a transport harness made of durasteel and fitted with power cells and repulsorlifts to keep it in the air. The crystal was easily 12 meters long, and had a diameter of about 2 meters.

"This, Jedi, is the Masuk' faik-khush. An ancient data crystal from the very ruins you are standing above!"

The professor gave the Jedi some time to look at the artifact, before he continued. " Unfortunately, the transport harness can only keep it afloat, any propulsion engine quickly crashes it into the ground as the gyrostabilizers on the harness get false readings and incorrectly try to correct for deviations... Next to the artifact, we have already finished packing all relevant equipment and gear. My six assistants have made sure to pack it all into crates. I take it you left your hoversled at the bottom of the ramp?", he sounded calm and happy while he led the two jedi to the next tent, were six hiocans were busy closing the last of the one cubic meter crates.

A quick count had the Jedi arrive at: 4 cubic meter crates, 6 assistants, 10 hiocan guards, the artifact and the professor himself. That hoversled they didn't bring sounded better and better... They had to find some way to get all this stuff with them.

((OOC: Note that the Ground and Space threads are now roughly two hours out of sync. I will remedy this soon, but for now, if you want to message the Space crew, put the message here, and I will make sure that the message is posted in the other thread at the correct time.))

"Hello professor Komian, I am Ariana Danacia. Unfortunately we came here on foot to check the place out."

When Ariana arrived on the hill she looked a bit confused. She first looked around for a few seconds.

"We should be able to solve this problem, but we do have some questions first.

Could you tell us more about the disturbance that is screwing with our orientation sensors? If we can locate it we might be able to fix it?

Don't you have any transports yourself... How did you get all this equipment here?

Are you all coming with us?

Since the crystal is hovering I might be able to move it with telekinesis, It should not be that hard since it is already floating. Any ideas for transportation Nathan?"

"How much more weight can that transport harness carry than it's carrying now?"

Nathan looked at the crystal.

"I suggest we load as much as possible onto it and carry the rest. If there's still anything left we leave it behind."

He looked at the Hiocan professor.

"Tell your people to get ready, I want to be ready to go in one hour. Every one carries a part, that includes us and phantom squad."

Without waiting for the professor's answer he started to get things ready.

The professor looked slightly suprised by the sudden barrage of questions and orders.

"Of course we didn't carry it here... We had two hoversleds with very primitive propulsion, but the military took them when those two corvettes crashed into the swamp. They had to use them to move their troops around, last I heard is that the sleds were destroyed when they fought the mandalorians on the ground."

"We don't know what exactly creates this interference, its either a natural phenomenom, or something in the ruins. Unfortunately, the ruins underground are massive, and mostly flooded. We have been here for months now, and we have yet to cover 20% of the ruins. It would take weeks to search all areas, and we wouldn't have a guarantee that we'd find anything..."

He looked at Nathan.

"Well, according to the manual, the transport harness should be able to carry another 4000 kilogrammes, but it has been running for a while, so it might be a bit less by now. I'll have the crates loaded onto the harness.", he sounded happy, "If we place them correctly, we might have two plateaus left and right of the crystal we can stand on. You'll have to come up with something to get the crystal moving though."

"This won't take long. Just tell me when you're ready, I'll have everyone stand by."

"We have multiple options for that. I will try moving the harness with telekinesis. But if that does not work we should fix the harness, maybe we can stabilize it by bypassing the sensors. Let me try to move it with Telekinesis first. "

Ariana starts to move the crystal in the harness for a few meters. She only pushes it and lets the harness do the heavy lifting.

"I'd rather push it, shouldn't be to hard since it's floating."

Then something the professor said caught Nathan's attention.

"Do you know if the mandalorian threat has been eliminated?"

((OOC: The force doesn't correspond with physics. The fact that you don't have to lift the crystal doesn't really matter for the effort needed to move it with the force. Regardless of this Ariana's check is approved.))

Ariana concentrated on her connection with the force. Slowly the harness and crystal started moving. To her it didn't feel easy. She remebered the feeling from her training, where she had to lift massive rocks without the help of a tranport harness. Ariana could move the harness this way, but it was exhausting and slow.

The professor looked at Nathan with a worried expression. "Well, the military says that the two crashed corvettes have been neutralized. One of them was found and there was a short battle. The other crashed in a deeper part of the swamp. No trace of it has been found, so they must have perished underwater."

((OOC: I meant physically pushing it, in which case I think it does. You would only have to overcome air resistance and it's lack of momentum. Since a floating object doesn't have to deal with friction.))

"I'm not assuming anything until the enemy has been confirmed KIA, doc."

Nathan stepped out of the tent and started barking orders.

"Phantom Squad, secure our egress point! The rest of you, finish breaking up camp and start loading those crates on the transport harness."

Next he keyed his secure comm link.

"Asillion to Misty Voyage and Parable Defence, be advised there are possible hostile ground forces in the area. Keep your guard up."

((OOC: @Nathan: I am both aware of and capable of reasoning about physics :P That was a remark related to Ariana's use of telekinesis to influence the harness.

Since you didn't actually state that Nathan tried to push it (nor did you include a check with at least Strength in it), I did not give you any results on normal manipulation of the transportation harness.))

"Acknowledged.", came the reply from the Misty Voyage, immediately followed by the second reply: "Roger that Asillion. We will execute periodic sensor sweeps. Parable Defence out."

Nathan's orders were quickly followed by Phantom squad. Though they were basically already guarding the ramp since the group arrived at the camp, they sent out two two-men teams to scout the local part of the return route.

Most of the hiocans looked at Nathan with a confused expression, seemingly not understanding the language. However, their officer clearly did understand galactic basic, and started giving orders of his own. He was clearly capable of translating, as the men and women of both the hiocan guard started to move the crates.

The officer walked over to Nathan, and asked: "Uhm...", he seemed a bit unsure, "Jedi, if I might ask.. Why are we breaking up the camp as well? It's a lot of extra weight to carry, and the camp will still needed when the work continues... Wouldn't it be better just to leave it as is?"

"Leave the rest of the camp. We don't need it. We only take the relevant equipment...

Do you guys have any kind of primitive engine here? What we need is 1 simple thruster to give the harness some forward momentum. We should be able to correct for height changes and do the steering by pushing it in the right direction ourselves. If there is no engine here we might have to go grab one of our speeder bikes and use it? "

Ariana tries to rig a small engine on the harness to trust it in one direction without stabilizers. It should not be fast but powerful enough to maintain walking speed. Ariana disassembles a part of the engine with telekinesis and starts to rig it to the harness.

((Check: 16 = 6 Force Level + 6 Reason + 2 Mechanical Engineer + 2 Telekinesis -- Ariana tries to attach an engine with a simple thruster to the harness. It should either not have gyroscopes or she will disable them.))

((OOC: Apologies for the late post. I haven't been feeling well lately, and I always try to have my full attention with the post writing.

Ariana's check is approved. I approve the use of telekinesis just to take something apart in this case, but note that this is on the edge of what I would allow.))

Ariana busied herself with removing the engine from a broken speeder she found in the camp. The story of how it came here was a bit silly actually, it was the favourite speeder of one of the research assistants, and he got it to the camp on a hoversled so he could work on fixing it after work hours. Of course, now Ariana had to take it apart, but at least she could use the engine for something useful.

Meanwhil, Nathan oversaw the loading of the crates and other packages on the transport harness. Using his training as a marine, he quickly determined how the harness should be packed to offer at least a platform with a minimum amount of cover, should they be attacked. It wouldn't hold in a serious firefight, but it would stop a few shots.

About twenty minutes later, Ariana started the ad-hoc propulsion system as a test. The platform started to move, even though the engines' output was small compared to the mass of the crystal. It seemed that the repulsor harness did a good job of reducing friction!

After rigging a primitive controller for the engine, Ariana could determine the amount of thrust from the engine with a lever. The harness couldn't be steered very well, and tight corners might require manually pushing the whole contraption away from whatever had to be evaded. Also, braking would be a problem, as the harness had little friction, and there weren't enough engines to put one on the front.

The harness was now completed! The contraption featured: two speeder engines at one short end, two rough platform made from crates on sticking out on the long sides of the crystal, and a few packages fixed on top that would offer minimal protection from incoming fire. The engines were rigged for low burn long duration thrust and controllable with two levers fixed on the left platform.

The Jedi were ready to move out. They only had to decided who rides and walks where, and they were good to go!

"Nathan will you ride the harness? I will do some steering when necessary with my telekinesis. I guess it is time to head back."

Ariana jump into the air and flew around the camp for a final sweep to check if they were not forgetting anything. After that she joined the rest and headed for the landing site.

"No thanks I'll walk. Professor, you and your assistants, get on that harness." Nathan said, reasoning they would be the slowest of the group as civilians usually had worse conditions than military personnel.

Looking around one last time he called out.

"All right people, lock and load. Let's get ready to move."

He switched to comms.

"Phantom how's our exit?"

"Fine, I will steer the harness myself."

Ariana gets on the harness and starts moving it out of the camp, when she notices that they are heading for a tree she slows down and nudges the harness in the right direction by physically pushing it or using her telekinesis when physical strength is not enough. Ariana navigates for their hover bikes.

((OOC: Ariana, your checks are approved. Nathan, since you didn't take any checks, or called out any actions I assumed that you just walked along.))

"Clear.", came the brisk reply of the phantom squad.

The professor and the assistants climbed onto the harness, clearly not used to climbing. Swooshing down the ramp offered some initial speed, but after the initial few meters the harness slowed down to its normal speed.

Progress was slow, and went at walking speed at best. Corrections of the Harness' movements are required frequently, and started to tire out Ariana. The Hiocan guards saw Ariana struggle with the harness, and helped with the physical pushing, but they seemed to have a lot of difficulty with the heavy ad-hoc vehicle.

After half an hour of work, they were still well inside the radiation bubble. With this speed, they would need another two hours of travel just to get to out of the bubble. And on top of that, the weather was getting worse with heavy clouds rolling in from the north and the swamp's mist getting thicker. They might actually get lost if they got disoriented from the path.

Nathan observed what was happening and realised they where going to slow. He made a decision.

He raised a closed fist, signalling everyone to stop. "Phantom, keep us covered." he called out to the recon team.

He looked at the professor and his assistants. "All right, every one of. Your walking the rest of the way." He looked at Ariana. "That means you too, Ariana. If you can control that thing while walking alongside."

Without any further delay he unslung the rope from his shoulder. He tied on end to the front of the harness. Then he ran the rope around his waist, over his right shoulder, under his left arm, across his chest, under his right arm, over his left shoulder and once more around his waist before tying the other end of the rope to the harness.

He had effectively tied himself to pull the harness like a horse and a carriage. "Everyone ready?" Nathan called out. As soon as he knew everyone was he said: "Then lets get moving."

And like that he started to pull with all his strength. Counting on his cybernetic body to be able to handle the strain.

Although Ariana was not sure how this would work out, she accepted the plan.

When Nathan was ready she activated the engine at a steady speed and let Nathan pull the harness for additional speed. She walked and flew next to the harness to correct its direction.

Nathan quickly roped himself in while the others dismounted. The professor had some trouble climbing back down, but he was helped by one of his assistants.

As Ariana had rigged the controls to one of the platforms, it was difficult to control the little engine from the side. She could detach the controls, but the cable wasn't long enough to actually walk next to the harness (and there were no devices around that could actually be used as a remote unless she spent half an hour tinkering). She could hover around with the controls, but that required enough concentration not to be able to use telekinesis. It was easier for her to just stand on the platform. Besides, her weight wasn't significant enough to really have an impact on the mass of the crystal itself.

Nathan's body was capable of handling the strain. The ground, unfortunately, was not. Nathan had to be careful where he put his feet, as the swamp's soil was treacherous. After a while he got the hang of it, and the pair of Jedi became confident in their ability to steer the collosal crystal. With Nathan plodding through the knee-high water, and Ariana manning the controls they managed to increase their speed. Ariana expected them to leave the bubble on roughly one and a half hour.

As they travelled, the weather turned worse. After half an hour, the mist was thick enough to limit vision to 20 meters. Some time later it started to rain softly. Roughly another hour later Ariana expected that, given their speed so far, they should have reached the speeders by now. However, she had yet to spot them. Of course, they would be easy to miss with the thick fog...

Unknown to Ariana, Nathan had just felt the radiation messing with his internal orientation sensor lessen to the point that he didn't need to recalibrate every few minutes.

As visibility became less Nathan switched to infra-red vision. He looked around to see if he could spot the speeders.

((Check: 9 = 5 Force Level + 4 Vision -- Switching his eyes to infra-red mode to see through the fog better and look for the speeders.))

Pausing a moment he said:

"Well I think we can say the package isn't responsible for the interference. I had some trouble with my orientation gyro's but they seem to be fine now."

"We take a small break here. Nathan can you try to find our speeders? I will activate our tracking device and communicate with the Eclipse to determine our location. I will also try the normal propulsion system of the harness."

Ariana puts the tracker on the package and activated it. After activating the tracker she opened a secure communication channel with the Eclipse. "This is Ariana Danacia, we are en-route with the package. Weather conditions are getting worse on the ground. Please scan for our tracking device and determine our current location. Transmit the data to my device. We believe we left the radiation field. How is our space corridor?" Ariana included the necessary security keys to transmit to her communication pad.

After opening communication with the Eclipse she activated the normal propulsion of the harness to check if what Nathan said was true.

((OOC: Due to the current time differences between the Ground and Space thread, the Ground thread (this one) might experience a slight delay in posting time for a week. I predict that the problem will be resolved earlier.))

Nathan's enhanced sight allowed him to see through the fog with ease. While he was searching the rain came to an abrupt end, though based on the slight decrease in light the clouds were still gathering. After about ten minutes of searching, he saw the speeders at a distance of 150 meters. There was something weird about the heat coming from the speeders. When he moved in closer to stand next to them, he saw what created the strange heat pattern: the speeders had been disabled with a lightsaber!

Meanwhile, Ariana was glad that she had brought a tracking device from the Praetorian vessel's armory. She quickly attached it the the transport harness and started the work of setting up a communications channel to the Eclipse. Just as she opened the channel, she noticed that the rain had stopped. She started speaking: "This is Ariana Danacia, we are en-route with the package. Weather conditions are getting worse on the ground. Please scan for our tracking... *static*. Loud static suddenly flooded the channel in the middle of her sentence.

As if on cue, both Nathan and Ariana recognized the loud rumble of a large vessel's engines powering up. As they looked up from their different locations, they saw that they were in trouble. A complete Mandalorian corvette of 175 meters long just started powering up its engines above them, blowing the 50 meters of fog between them and the enormous vessel clear.

As a single taunting "Prepare to die, Jedi!" voice came over the radio over the static, both Ariana and Nathan could easily spot the ropes that were thrown down from different hatches with about 40 Mandalorian soldiers rappelling down into the swamp. Unfortunately, they also saw the four commando's with jetpacks diving towards the crystal. One of these commando's wasn't carrying a blaster but wielded a red lightsaber!

Luckily, the fog was gone...

((OOC: There is a moment of time before the Commando's arrive. You can take a short action to prepare for combat -- I will call round 0 in the next post!))

Ariana was aware that she had no time to waste.

"Nathan get back to the crystal!"

After that she opened communications with the Leopard Wing and Scateat-1.

"We are under attack by a Sith and a Mandalorian Corvette. We requiring immediate assistance, our tracking beacon is active."

Finally she directed her attention to the scientists. "Take cover behind the crystals!"

Ariana spread her wings and activated both her lightsabers. She was ready for battle.
