[ Hyperspace ] The Mandalore

A call was made to the Jedi to join a small vessel hopping around through hyperspace. The military vessel known simply as "the knife" was large enough for maybe four or five hundred people, although there weren't nearly as many on board. All the Jedi knew was that this mission was related to the plans regarding the Mandalorians, and they could feel that this was "it", the fruits of their earlier labours.

This mission wasn't set up as a normal gathering as they had done earlier, however, as if it somehow required extra security. Rather than allowing every Jedi to fly in filly nilly, there were specific rendezvous times given to each Jedi, and the mission involved some waiting around in the vessel while each Jedi was picked up. Thus, the ship filled slowly, but certainly.

Each Jedi had their own, small quarters and besides the bridge, machine rooms and weapon stations, the ship featured a central area that connected these places, which also served as a 'town square', with some plants set up and a food and drinks machine. There was even a poster-screen which cycled through various public service messages, each presented by improbably attractive soldiers, in the style of 'don't forget to wash your hands' and 'loose lips sink ships'.

((OOC: This story will feature multiple forum and chat elements. You need not participate in every part, but it would be good to at least read up on things when participating.

This mission has unlimited spots, which will open up over time. Right now, there are two spots. The first person to enter will count as "having been here" already, and the roleplay starts with the second person to enter joining the vessel. Come Monday, a third spot will open, then a fourth on Thursday the 8th, etc.

I will be providing some minor in-flight action, but as Jedi are gathered this is primarily intended for roleplay, and I will especially create an opportunity to discuss
the morality of this mission, and the relation to the Jedi code, so hopefully people will enjoy that. Don't worry though, we'll cut to action soon enough as well!

I deliberately don't designate a posting frequency. Instead, as an experiment, I will be posting at irregular intervals, and if you haven't taken an action yet, then I'll continue as if you hadn't. That means we won't have to wait for the slowest poster.))

Nathan sat in the ship's central area, enjoying a moment of peace and quiet. He was a bit unsure as to what his purpose here was, but he had a feeling he wanted to be here.

((OOC: Is there any crew on board the ship?))

Ariana joined in some time after Nathan. She entered the ship and looked around. After noticing Nathan in the central area she greeted him with a small head nod.

A brief moment later she decided to sit down next to him.

"It seems we both decided to see this thing through to the end."

They weren't the only Jedi who had come on board it seemed. As they greeted one another, Jedi Master Screetor walked out of one of the hallways, dressed in the traditional robes of a Jedi Master, with a lightsaber on his side.

Seeing the Jedi collection, he too gravitated towards the group, nodding sagely as he arrived.

"Are you prepared to end it though?" the master inquired.

((OOC: Since its monday, another slot has opened, so a new Jedi can now join in!))

After she received the schedule of boarding, Shebi Ajava had quickly packed the gear she expected to need and made sure to be on time. She had the chest of equipment brought to her quarters as she herself made her way onto the Knife throug the normal boarding port. As usual for her interactions with the Union military, she made sure to wear her Knight's robes. This time, she even deemed it unnecessary to wear her armour underneath.

She was a little surprised to see that Nathan and Ariana were scheduled before her, but glad that the Union military had at least enough sense to make sure that not all sent Jedi were boarding at the same time. From experience she has learned that some of the Jedi were very enthusiastic when it comes to destroying and combat. Much too enthusiastic for her taste.

As she made her way through the ship to find her quarters, she was distracted by the sight of the many plants on the small plaza. The next thing she notices is the improbably attractive veolian soldier endorsing one of the many --in her opinion superfluous -- statements about ship safety.

Hearing master Screetor made her realize that there were others sitting somewhere in between the plants. Walking over to the small group, Ajava sees Nathan, Ariana and Screetor. She silently nods to them, starting with master Screetor, and continuing in order of precedence.

Instead of budding into the conversation, she sits down on the edge of one of the large planters and waits for the reply to Screetor's question. She feelts that at least one of the others should have given the matter some thought, she knows she has.

Ariana nodded after the words of Master Screetor. She pauses for a moment and answers with only a single word. "Yes."

"So it seems." Nathan replied, both to Master Screetor and Ariana. He had gotten some of his parts replaced before he had boarded. He was in the best shape he could be in physically. He couldn't be more ready for his mission then he was now. All he needed now was his mission.

The Jedi master nodded, then spoke again spoke solemnly.

"We are not under attack this time, but will be going towards the enemies home. You may need to kill people - and not all of them will have been responsible for the attacks on the Union. Some of them may be innocents, who are merely defending their home from foreign invaders."

He looked at Shebi Ajava, then Ariana, then Nathan.

"How many innocent lives are you ready to take for this mission to succeed?"

Was Master Screetor testing their resolve? Was it a merely philosophical question? Or was there something deeper behind these questions.

Ajava takes of her hood.

"In truth, I hope that we will be recalled before we have made it to Mandalorian territory...", Ajava does not speak with her normal authoritative tone.

"Given the other options, I feel that the senate has chosen this option with undue haste.

The inactivity of the Mandalorians and the other actions we have undertaken, which have not been without bloodshed, have already severely deterred Mandalorian military activity. The goal of orienting the clans inwards once more has effectively been achieved for the time being."

"It might be better to leave it at this."

"I will do what is necessary, Master. However I refuse to kill non-combatants, if that is what you're asking." Nathan replied.

"If we can assure the Mandalorians can never threaten the Union again, then we have to. But is this really the Jedi way, Master? What is it exactly you're asking of us?"

"We can not judge how many lives the mission is worth if we do not know the details of the mission.

"That is, in a way, what I am asking." Jedi Master Screetor noted at Nathans question, as to whether this was really the Jedi way. He listened to the views of each of the Jedi.

"As you say Nathan, you are willing to do what is necessary. But how do we know what is necessary?

Ariana raises an interesting point in this: there are always casualties in a war. And she fairly brings up the question as to how many lives the mission is worth. If we do not go, how many would die because of our negligence? How many would live if we abandon it instead?

Our fair Veolian friend here raises it as an equally fair objection: has the senate made this decision in haste?"

The Jedi Master raised these questions but didn't answer them, seeming to want the other Jedi to elaborate on their own views.

((OOC: As it is monday once again, there are now two spots free on the mission. If there are no new joiners by next thursday, I will close the mission and run it with this group. If not, I will keep adding spots until no new entries are made.))

((OOC: I hope to become knight before this actual mission start.))

Trigiel arrives in his usual attire. He steppes into the 'town square' and looked around amazed. "Such a waste of precious space," he says before stepping towards the group of jedi.

"Greetings." He says and bows at the socially accepted moment, to join and not to interrupt the conversation.

"As far as I see, there is little evidence that the no other Mandalorian will rise from the clans to take the position Mandalore."

She nodded back at Trigiel as a greeting.

"The current Mandalore achieved the position in part through their own qualities, and in part through the help of a group of force users. We know not the ratio's of these parts.

First, let us assume that the Mandalore does not act alone, and that they rely heavily on external help. If we go through with the senate's plan, we might very well remove a sock puppet from power. At the moment, this Mandalore's influence is weakened, the clans doubt his ability to lead. The event of the Mandalore dying at the hands of the Jedi would give those behind the sock puppet a renewed cause to have a new Mandalore stand up and call for a second strike at the Union or another faction.

Now, let us say that the Mandalore rose to this position through cunning and strength, and commands external help like a weapon. Our actions have made him look less in control, yet they retain enough influence to remain the Mandalore. We have struck at their special forces, and we have weakened them severly. The current Mandalore has little motivation to call for a second strike at the Union, as it will only help his underlings recall the failure of the first. Removing the Mandalore will create a power vacuum. At best, this will destabilize the Mandalorian Fleets, but it is much more probable that another steps into this vacuum."

Ajava looks at the other Jedi.

"Regardless of the situation, removing the current Mandalore will likely produce more violence, which will serve to prolong the times of chaos. Many great civilisations have started as violent empires united by a common ideal. I think the Mandalorians are no different. We might view them as uncivilised pirates extorting their tax worlds, and their ideals do not match ours, yet they have the seeds of a great civilisation. Their ideal of battle as the highest activity will prove difficult to reconcile with our ideals. But they to understand the value of cooperation, lest we would not see clans and fleets form within their ranks."

"The Mandalore knows he has been defeated. Going to their home and murdering them is not a path to peace. Let him live to know that his neighbours are strong, to see that their strength comes from civility and restraint as much as as theirs comes through battle prowess.

This, I feel, is the better path to take."

T'sal goes to the ship "the knife" and drops her stuff there. It are the same things she had used for her previous mission against the Mandalorian. She had collected the data and helped the clans fight the Mandalore, so she wanted also to be there on this last mission. She takes a look around, but she does not see any of the other so she goes outside.

T'sal goes outside to the town square and find the other there. It seems that they are in a big discussion. She greets them and bows. She then listens as to find out what the others are talking about.

"Good day to you all."

"Master, what is the council's opinion on this mission? For that matter why haven't you given us the details of this mission yet?" Nathan had already concluded Ajava believed their mission was to kill the Mandalore, he wasn't so sure.

After thinking a moment he asked another question.

"Do we have any indication the Mandalore is being controlled by someone? Sith aren't really known for their ability to serve after all."

Trigiel bowed to T'Sal.

"We are talking about killing the Mandalore?" He said.

"I think that, although master Shebi Ajava makes some good points, there is also the other side: If the Mandalore is a sock-puppet, than he will be played like a sock-puppet. His controllers would care have not more or less intentions to attack the Union, us killing the Mandalore would not really change their plans. If they don't care about the sock-puppet, than they will remove him any time they like to attack us of the Union. At the other hand, the fact that the Mandalore is still in power, means they have plans with him. Us of the jedi removing the Mandalore will thus harm the controllers plans.

If the Mandalore is in power, and we remove him, than the new Mandalore who will grab power will remember the failure of the last one. He would think twice to attack the Union, since we in return would harm his followers base and remove him from power again. Making killing the Mandalore the best path to peace."

"If this is the case the war is not over.

This path you are suggesting would most likely lead to a battle between us and the force users that support the Mandalore."

The Jedi master nodded to T'sal as she joined the group.

"The Council has given its support to this mission. Though it was not unanimous." Master Screetor replied to Nathan's question, though it seemed it was also a reply to Ajava's views.

"I have no evidence that the Mandalore is a sock puppet. If he is, it is certainly a high placed one."

The Jedi master looked around to see if the disagreeing Jedi dared to engage one another in this moral debate. Regardless, he did not provide more detail about the mission ahead yet.

It didn't go unnoticed by Nathan that Master Screetor still refused to give them the mission details. He wondered why the Jedi Master was reluctant to give the details.

It unnerved Nathan. The reluctance could be because Master Screetor didn't like the moral implications or that it was too great a risk. But that wasn't what unnerved him. It unnerved him because the situation felt very familiar, even tough Nathan had never encountered such a situation as far as he knew.

Snapping back to the here and now, Nathan fell back on something he was told once.

"A war isn't over until someone has lost. I believe the Mandalorians still pose a significant threat to the Union. As such no one has lost this war yet. I say we make sure we're not the ones to lose. As Jedi we can ensure the lowest possible amount of people die."

Nathan looked at the other Jedi.

"We are the most qualified to do that, it's our duty to accept."

"That's not for me to decide. Nor is it up to you to decide that, Ma'am." Nathan had never been afraid to call a superior out when he believed they were making a mistake. He wouldn't start now.

"I will admit my opinion is biased in this matter. But my home is right on the front line, people I care for live there.

And what about the worlds in Mandalorian space? Do you really think the people on those worlds like being raided constantly? As Jedi we also have an obligation to them, not just the people of the Union."

Nathan looked Ajava dead in the eye.

"So don't give me that rhetorical bullshit."

Ajava was not really looking forward to yet another round of what she has come to suspect is Nathan's defence against anything that does not fit his view of the world, so she simply replied in a calm voice.

"It seems to me that you did not answer the question. I asked you what a war is, and you reply by calling my question bullshit."

"I asked because you seem certain that a war isn't over until someone has lost. To make sure that we are not discussing about a difference in definition, I ask you to define what a 'war' actually is?"
