[ Sector 14 -11 ] Bring a Twi'lek ex-slave home
Hearing the steps they had to take, Trigiel wonders why it had to be so difficult and devious.
"Excuse me, not to be ungrateful or anything, but when there are such 'political issues', wouldn't it be a lot easier to point us the way, and then we take a speeder or other appropriate transport? You do not have to worry about sending the wrong message, and we do not have to worry about worsening the situation."

The Veolian padawan sighed mentally at the, from a veolian point of view, naive question. She was however, interested in the reply, so she opted to remain silent for now.

"Shooting people who are here to help others would be considered very rude - other clans would never accept such an act without a just cause and the sanction of the Kiva." Arnia'Evixel explained, seeming to feel that the Veolian culture was very strange for believing that assassinations were acceptable social behaviour.
The large Twi'lek male turned to Trigiel - he seemed to be taken aback by the suggestion, not sure for a moment how to respond to such a ludicrous suggestion. "You cannot just show up to a clan leader like that... it would be most irregular!"
"Indeed..." Arnia interjected "You cannot just... no, just no!" she explained.
"His Lordship has been kind enough to offer to arrange our introduction. That is a great honour and service he is doing for us, because as keeper of the space port, it is his place to do such things for foreigners." For some reason, the term foreigners did not seem to include Arnia'Evixel, despite her long absence from the planet. "We should seek out an appropriate gift for the clan leader next." she didn't actually say it, but the implication seemed to be that the local noble they were talking to should get a gift as well.
"And once we have that, we should go over how to behave when meeting the clan leader..." she suggested.

Only now did Ajava realize that the man they were talking to was a noble. Given the décor, and the distinct lack of servants she was fooled into thinking that he was just the next level of the social infrastructure usually surrounding nobility. Ajava just thought that the twi'lek girl's first mention of 'his lordship' was directed at whomever was in charge of this city; but apparently this man was 'his lordship'.
"We are very grateful for you efforts, your Lordship.", Ajava said with a bow to the man. "We shall leave you be, and arrange for the necessary gifts."
With that, Ajava started to leave.

"We will leave the arrangement in your capable hands then." And with a bow Trigiel started to leave as well.

As the two Padawans left with the former slave girl, they soon found a quiet spot with some benches where they could speak.

Sitting down, the slave girl began to explain.
"There are many Twi'lek clans on many different worlds. The clans have to be respected." she explained "We should get a gift for his Lordship, something small which he can easily trade would be appropriate, since you're foreigners." she continued. "For the clan leader, it should be something the clan can use..." she paused "What you brought would have been excellent..." she sighed "Except that was... acquired by others."
She looked apologetically to the two padawans "I am sorry I am so much trouble for you..." she stated softly, casting her eyes down and curling her lekku together.
"Oh, I know! Maybe we can visit the temple and ask the Kiva for help?"

Ajava sat down next to the girl.
"Don't worry. Though I did not expect to find such interesting obstacles in our path, I do not see how you are to blame. While I admit to being lost by your culture, I at least understand the necessity of proper interaction."
Her last sentence was said while she looked at Trigiel.
"This Kiva you speak of, I take it this is a religious position?"

"You are no trouble, not at all." The cyborg said reassuring, "we are to help people, sitting in the jedi temple will only be helpful for so far.
You know what?" he said enthusiastically, "Shebi Ajava and I can always go back to the 'customs service' and reacquire the bottle and other stuffs. I believe there won't be a Skulddarian whiskey on the market, and if there is one, it is probably out of our budget. But yeh, visiting the Kiva sounds good as well."

The Twi'lek woman nodded. "The Kiva are the priestesses of Kika'Lekki" she explained "Where there's Twi'leks, there's Kiva - they adjudicate disputes, help the poor and solve problems." she continued. "They can even speak with They speak with Kika'Lekki on your behalf."
"But it is very important that you do what they say. If you don't, it is really bad."
With the way she spoke of them, it was clear the girl had a great reverence and a little bit of fear for the Kiva. No doubt inspiring such feelings made it a lot easier for the priesthood to perform the aforementioned duties.
"There is a temple nearby here." the girl stated, for a moment leaving the two Jedi to wonder how she would know that, though as the girl moved off in the direction of the temple, it became clear she was simply following the scent of incense, which seemed to be getting stronger the closer they got to the temple.
((OOC: If you want to execute a different plan, or wish to prepare something before going to the temple, now's the time, otherwise I'm continuing with the temple scene.))

"Bad as in: You get smitten by thunder-lightning, or bad as in: everybody will hate you?" Trigiel asked after the 'you must listen' part, "Because I am not afraid of getting smitten... Although, the power overload might be fatal for me."
Trigiel didn't had a better plan besides getting back to their ship and reclaim their annexed goods, so he followed the Twi'lek to the temple.

Being raised in a culture where social status is of the utmost importance, Shebi Ajava easily picked up on the girl's feelings for the Kiva. Although she didn't believe in a deity per se, but she is very aware of the fact that there are entities whose power should not be questioned outright. After all, to her, her Jedi training was a way to become such an entity.
While Trigiel talked some more with the girl, the veolian padawan sits down on one of the more removed benches, and closes her eyes.
"Deity or no, I have no idea what kind of training these Kiva have.", she thought to herself. With the utmost care, she prepared herself for the eventuality that the Kiva might affect her with the force. First, she split of part of her consciousness, with a single task: accept mental influence and pretend to be affected. Then, she wrapped herself in a defence against being tricked by mental influence. ((Check: 10 = 6 Force Level + 3 Reason + 1 Mind Trick -- Braces herself against mental influence -- not sure whether this is Reason or Energy. I claim Mind Trick because knowing an attack allows a better defence.))
After she prepared herself, she walked over to the others. "I'm ready." While walking, she tried to hold the girl's hand, if the Twi'lek would allow it.

"You should not mock the Gods, they do not like that..." the Twi'lek warned Trigiel when he indicated he did not take the danger very seriously.
The path soon led to a building carved out into the rock with some worn stairways leading up to the entrance. It was clear immediately this place had been a site of worship for a long time, and whatever gods were worshipped here had to be ancient.

The scent of incense hung in the air like a silk curtain, covering everything and making it seem more pleasant somehow. Surprisingly, nobody appeared to be here. Stepping into the shade of the building, it immediately felt cooler, the rocks providing natural climate control and being more effective than one would expect from a passive system.

The inside of the temple was lit by candles set in glass jars and burning surprisingly brightly - they also seemed to be the source of the scent, the incense apparently mixed in to form some sort of strongly scented candle. From the way each one was slightly different, it seemed these were hand-made.
Notably there seemed to be no depictions of deities or religious markings of any kind, which seemed odd. As they looked around though, an elder Twi'lek woman wearing simple, dark green robes to match her green skin stepped down the stairs, the edge of her robe trailing behind her slightly.
The Twi'lek girl bowed her head as the elder woman stopped before them, curling her lekku tightly together.
"Greetings foreigners." she greeted the two Jedi. For a moment it seemed as if the woman ignored the Twi'lek, but the two Jedi noticed that this was not the case - in fact, she was moving her lekku, acknowledging the girls presence as she greeted the Jedi in parallel. Unfortunately, the details of what was said in the lekku language were lost on them, though most likely it was some variation of "hello".

Trigiel took of the hood of his robes again and bowed as well for the Kiva, imitating the former slave girl. He might be the 'straight forward guy', he was not without any education and his mother did try to teach him some manners.
Now they were here, he forgot why they were actually here and what he had to say. 'We where bringing back the girl,' he thought, 'and were waiting before the fat twi'lek had arranged stuff, oh that's right, presents.'
"Greetings," he staggered an instant, 'what was her title again?' he thought, "Kiva." What was happening to him, Trigiel did not feel totally himself, must be the smell. He shut off his smell receptors to shut out the smell of incense. 'Much better.'
"We are jedi who escort this jong lady back to her parents. My companion," where Trigiel gestured to Shebi, "Has freed here from the Hutt. The young lady suggested to visit you, to seek advice. As for one, we need suitable gifts to present to the lords, but sadly the ones we brought have been... confiscated.. on our way."

Just before entering the temple, Ajava pulls back the hood of her jedi robes. She saw is no reason the Kiva shouldn't know she was a veolian -- even though this might complicate things.
"Greetings, Kiva.", she said with a polite nod.
"As my cyborg companion already said, we are trying to bring home Arnia'Evixel. I promised her that I would protect her and bring her home. We met during a mission where I collaborated with a group of ultramarines operating in Hutt territory..."
"We were told that the current political situation wouldn't allow us to bring her home without suitable gifts. And a Slave Rebellion border patrol saw fit to confiscate the supplies we took with us as a gift, next to most all equipment not absolutely necessary to fly our ship. We only have just enough fuel to make it back to the Union, unless we are stopped again on our way back.
Now, we come to you in search of aid, as I wish to fulfil my promise."

"A most generous act on your part, foreigners. No doubt Arnia'Evixel has expressed her deepest gratitude towards you both." That seemed to be directed more to the Twi'lek who nodded quickly to confirm.
"Such generosity should be rewarded. Please follow me, but be careful not to touch the scented candles." For a moment it seemed as if they held some sort of sacred value and touching them might be a religious faux pas, but it soon turned out nothing so serious was the case. "They are very hot."
Leading the way deeper into the temple complex, the woman stopped at a short stairway running into a wall - this was not a real staircase intended to go anywhere, but a place where different layers offered room for different offerings made to the temple by the faithful. Notably the top layers displayed more expensive and extravagant offerings than the lower layers.
Reaching somewhere in the middle, the Kiva retrieved a bolt of silk cloth.
"This will be an appropriate gift for the clan." she explained, giving it to Trigiel.
"And this," she stated, retrieving a small bag of credit chits "would be an appropriate gift to the space port master." she handed this one to Shebi Ajava.
The Twi'lek girl nodded happily to confirm.
The Kiva looked around a moment, pondering, then moving to a cabinet on the side, opening it and retrieving a simple box. "And this would be an appropriate gift for the clan elder." she gave to the Twi'lek girl. "Be sure it is tended to... lest you will be in real trouble."
The girl nodded "Yes, of course Mother." That was clearly a title - the Kiva was not the girls actual mother.
Given the average level of poverty on the planet, Shebi and Trigiel realised they had been given quite a lot of money in gifts just now with very few questions asked in comparison.
"Now, Jedi..." she stated, clearly addressing Ajava rather than Trigiel. "Explain those to me." She indicated Ajava's head.

Not entirely getting why the Kiva made such a point of her sira-rija, after all, it was just minor a esthetic genetic quality.
"My lekku? Oh I get it, but we don't have lekku... Twi'lek have lekku, after all, lekku are long.", Ajava indicated Arnia'Evixel's lekku. "The thing that would best match lekku is something we call sira-punj."
"I have sira-rija, which roughly translates to 'head ridge'. Others have sira-punj, which translates to 'head tail', or both, and some have sira-bala, which can actually be translated in a useful manner: it's 'head hair'. Though Veolians with hair never with sira-rija -- those two traits are mutually exclusive as far as we know.
And then there are some rare variations such as sira-sīnga, which translates to 'head horns', and mathe-dhala, which is best translated to 'forehead shield', or thori-punj, which translates to 'chin tail'...", the veolian padawan could easily continue her list, but she was a bit wary of the Kiva inspecting her.
"Ok. Tell me, what's special about my sira-rija?"

"You are telling me only some of your species have these? How very peculiar... this seems to confirm some things." she nodded
"Do they have muscle tissue? Can you move them?" The kiva continued with a barrage of questions "What is their biological function for your species? Do they have religious significance? Why do some of you have them but others do not? How many do you have on average? Are they always this sma... size?" she corrected herself
With how few questions the Kiva had granted them a small fortune in gifts, she sure seemed interested in Ajava's sira-punj... and what more, Arnia'Evixel seemed to think this made perfect sense.

"Yes, only some of my species have sira-rija. I think that there are distinctly more women with sira-rija, but some men have them as well."
Though Shebi Ajava found the barrage of questions to be a bit weird, the woman did just hand them the local equivalent of a small fortune in gifts...
"They don't have muscle tissue, but with some practice one could move them as a side effect of flexing other muscle groups. As to their biological function: as far as I know they are purely esthetical, though it is very soothing to have them stroked. There is no religious significance, because Veolians don't have a religion. We had a religion a long time ago, but it was an untrue religion so we stopped following it.
I have nine sira-rija, six directly visible, and three more underneath the topmost six. If you look at the back of my head, you can see the other three follow the surface of my head downward to my neck. Sira-rija are always this size, but sira-punj can be as long as lekku... If you have some paper and charcoal or a pencil I could draw some heads of people I know? That would help me explain the different features and allow you to ask more directed questions."
((OOC: I'm assuming that Jedi are good drawers -- they get their Force Level on such checks as well ^_^))

"Please do!" the Kiva made sure to get Ajava the drawing materials she requested.
"You said your species has no religion? Do they not know about Kika'Lekki? How does your species procreate without religion? Don't you need moral values to function as a society? Also, how can you claim to be a Jedi if you also claim not to have a religion?"
The Kiva was most puzzled by the Veolians answers which seemed to bring out only more questions.

Shebi Ajava took a moment to recall the looks of a few veolian people she met. After viewing their faces, she started drawing, not paying any attention to the composition on the paper. After she was done, she unceremoniously added some arrows and numbers, and noted some names at the bottom of the paper.
"There", she handed the paper to the Kiva, "that should help to clarify things."
"Now, to answer your questions: No, veolians do not have a religion. Though you could see our desire for genetic improvement as a belief in evolution. I know that Twi'lek believe in Kika'Lekki, but I am sure that there are veolians that don't know of your deity.
Ehm...", Ajava was a tad confused by the remark about procreation, "Religion is not really required for procreation. As far as I know, the procreative biological processes of veolians don't differ much from twi'lek, a male and female are usually involved, and we are mammals as well.
We have moral values.", Ajava sounded slightly offended, "How else could the Veolian Commonwealth exist as an empire? The strong protect the weak, and the weak support the strong. From this morality, all other just actions follow.
Yes, most view Jedi as religious. And it is true, I never said I had no religion. I said that veolians don't have a religion. I am a Jedi, and I have faith that the Force guides me to something, if I have the will to follow it. But I am wary of where the Force guides me, so I do not follow it blindly."

The Kiva nodded, having listened carefully to Shebi's explanation. "Your people are very strange... I will have to ask the Mother for guidance in this."
She nodded - she had asked enough questions for now.
"I shall not hold you from your mission any longer. The gifts I have given you should be enough to let you succeed in your mission. Go, with the blessing of Kika'Lekki."
And with that, the woman took the drawing and turned to leave.

Though she was glad that the head-shape interrogation was finally over, Ajava wanted to know one thing: "Kiva, why do you care about my peoples' head phenotypes?"
