The Jedi Council is proud to announce that sign up has opened for the Lightsaber Championships. In this Championship, participating Jedi will face one another in duels with practice sabers.

The Tournament is open in three categories or levels, specifically those of Initiate, Padawan and Knight. Details of the tournament rules will be announced at the start of the tournament.

((OOC: Sign up today! If enough people sign up, there will be a Combat Style in there for all participants. Exact tournament schedule will be determined based on the number of participants, but since everyone except Salia is of Padawan level, we'll only be roleplaying the Padawan Lightsaber Championship.))

T’sal signs up for the tournament. This would be an excellent change to fine-tune her own skills and see how the others are doing.

Although attacking first is not the way of the teprogrena, Trigiel really enjoys a good lightsaber fight, so he didn't thought twice and signed up as soon he could.

Nathan signed up for the tournament, he was pretty sure he would be the underdog but his marine training told him this was a good way to increase his skills.

Three arena's had been prepared for the Jedi of each level: Initiate, Padawan and Knight, though of course the current focus was entirely on the Jedi Padawan arena, where the most sign-ups had been - historically, the Padawan matches were also the most competitive, with most Initiates too young to really go at it and most Knights having tempered their own enthusiasm, at least for the sake of appearances.

An outside arena ground had been prepared, overseen by six huge statues holding out classical swords - of course they were made of solidified foam rather than real stone, meaning they could support the weight of a person, but they could also be carried out afterwards to go back into storage when their dramatic appearance was no longer necessary.

The arena floor itself was made of dark sand, with a central bowl of concrete, lower than the sand outside of it. The bowl was surrounded by several small circular platforms and a central platform in the middle of the bowl allowed Jedi Padawans to jump from one platform to the next with a Force Jump for added interesting terrain.

Of course no real lightsabers were used, but instead everyone was equipped with training sabers - those who preferred their own weapon would have it refitted with a training blade for the championship. Training sabers functioned exactly identical to real ones, but besides some minor first degree burns, the blade was not actually capable of causing true harm: the Jedi council frowned on people cutting off one another's limbs for sports.

Master Screetor stepped forward to explain the rules.

"Padawans, please gather around."

He waited a moment for everyone to arrive.

"This tournament will consist of three rounds and each of you will battle three times against one another. Who you fight will be announced at the start of each round, and the winner will be the Padawan with the most wins." he explained "The rules are simple: the first solid hit is a win, as it would be in a real lightsaber battle.

I do not doubt you will all do your very best, but try not to get yourself hurt, last Championship we had someone break a leg and we do not want any repeats of that. Also, please be sure to keep an eye on the judges, they might rule a winner before a solid hit has been made if the battle goes on too long, at which point they will look at minor hits as a tiebreaker.

The match starts at my signal. Are there any questions?"

((OOC: The OOC rules are as follows:

Each round will take place simultaneously, meaning we will have four battles going on at once. You can use arena set pieces, but you may not leave the arena or you are disqualified. All matches are win or lose, we don't have ties. If a match takes too long, I look at the number of minor injuries or if those are also the same, I make a judgement call based on who roleplayed more skilfully.

To keep the time-limit sane, all four combats in one round will OOCly take place at the same time, though ICly they will be held one after the other - presumably IC they won't take a week for a move ^_^

I will NOT handle each battle individually. Instead, I will be posting results of each turn within a battle in all four battles once per week on the weekend. Be sure your post is in before then, as I will not wait for you and a failure to post means I count you as doing the same thing you did last week, which could mean you lose.

The regular combat rules apply, which includes roleplay bonuses, so be sure to make a cool post!

If there are any rules questions (either Jedi rules or tournament rules) you can ask them now - during the combat I'd prefer no OOC discussions about rules. If you have a question or disagree about something an opponent does, please PM Mercury instead of posting OOC about it.

I will be posting the match-ups at a later time to first give everyone a chance to ask questions.

So... questions?))

((OOC: With training weapon do you mean a ligth saber with regular blade + hilt?
I would like to have a short blade (retrofit if necessary).

I have a question on dual wielding and martial arts.
Are there any penalties or no weapon bonus when attacking with the off-hand or barehanded?

Oh and for game play, do we start with round 0 picking style, wait for your post or not?))

When nobody asked a question, Shebi Ajava started: "Master Screetor, how can this be a measure of skill if the weapons do not allow us the full expressive range of our chosen combat styles? I am afraid I would have to put an unreasonable amount of force behind any attack in which I attempt a Sun Djem manoeuvre."

"To what extend are we allowed to use equipment in the battle? Can I for example use rock throwers and attached blunt knives, or crippling cables? I assume training flame throwers and missiles are out of the question?

Also: I like to use tonfa handles, are these in training sabers?"

((OOC: Training weapon means exactly identical to your regular lightsaber except non-lethal. There are no penalties for using off-hand, the game leaves you free to be descriptive in this regard and really it'd get too complicated with rules for that. When not using a lightsaber you get the penalty of not getting the lightsaber bonus. We will start with a round 0 as per regular combat.))

"I doubt the Sun Djem manoeuvre will be affected by the fact that training sabers are used instead of regular sabers. Experiences teaches us a few bumps and bruises are to be expected.

As for the use of rock throwers and blunt knives... this is a lightsaber championship. Tonfa handles should not be a problem, but really, a rock or a blunt knife is a far inferior weapon. Stick to the lightsaber as much as you can?" he shook his head at the suggestion.

Finally, after much anticipation, Jedi Master Screetor put up the matchings:

  • Fecta Trigiel vs Nathan Miodrass Asillion
  • Ariana Danacia vs Nebesnogo Sveta
  • Shaedys vs Nalan Passik
  • Shebi Ajava vs T'sal

Each participant entered the arena on their designated side, readying to face off against their respective opponents. The atmosphere was tense and the urge to win seemed to boil in the air.

The sound of the gong echo'd through the hall like thunder, marking the start of the fight!

((OOC: We start off with round 0. In this round you do not attack but merely declare the combat style you are using. You can also take the opportunity to roleplay entering the arena, to describe your character and their intimidating presence to your opponent, and to taunt them if you wish.

This round will end Friday the 28th of September at midnight, so there's plenty of time, but you should have your combat style chosen by then. If you do not choose, you will use Shii-Cho by default.))

Trigiel entered the arena, walking towards Nathan. He made a formal bow, a sign that he did not intent to cause real harm in this fight.

"Greetings, Nathan Miodrass Asillion, it is the first time I actually stand against another cyborg. I will be interested to see how the difference in cybernetics will uphold."

When Nathan did his thing before the fight, (if he does so,) Trigiel waited and listened. Then he took a few steps back to stand at a standard dual distance. With a wide gesture did his he opened his arm pockets and ejected both lightsabers into his hands, after which he activated them.

He prepared for what he was doing best: A quick double attack with his two sabers.

((OOC: attack: 6/6/5
Style: Ataru, stats includes -2 first round penalty.

Edit: wrongly stated defence stats.))

Nathan carefully watched his apponent as he entered the arena. He returned the bow slightly more rigid than Trigiel.

"Hello to you too, Fecta Trigiel, but I think it will be more a matter of skill than hardware."

After stretching his synthetic muscles a bit, he prepaired to start. Placing his feet apart, he bent his knees slightly to lower his center of gravity. Grabbing his lightsaber from his belt, he held the hilt close to his face pointing at Trigiel and activated it.

He would start simple: defend than retaliate hard.

((OOC: attack: 6/4/3
defende: 8/7/6
style: Shii-Cho, stats include -2 first round penalty.))
