Ariana had not expected Nathan to be so agressive to try to pull her out of the air but it did not matter since her agressive bashing forced Nathan into a defensive stance which left him unable to actually finish her. Since Ariana is afraid that Nathan will keep on trying such stunts she decides to be a little more careful and try a defensive approach.

Ariana tries to maintain her distance and height. She has trouble with Nathans long range slashes and tries to circle around Nathan. Ariana deflects the pillar that is pushed onto her with her telekinesis. Quickly after this Ariana swoops down and moves a heap of rubble with her telekinesis from the previously crashed pillars and smashes it between her and Nathan to use it as a barrier.

((Check: 12 = 4 Force Level + 5 Energy + 1 Telekinesis + 2 Hawk Bat Swoop -- Deflecting the pillar away from her body and moving rubble to block Nathans path.))

((OOC: (offensive advantage and off balance included) Taking a defensive advantage action.

Trigiel was out of options and out of ideas. 'O wait, if Nebesnogo Sveta is a little unattending, I have a final plan.' But then he realised that the first hit was a win, and the competition rules made no exception for cyborgs. His last option was to run, re-establish himself and try again. But it had to be something good, as Nebesnogo had some nasty advantages here. So Trigiel ran, every time Nebesnogo Sveta came a little close by, Trigiel ran and jumped first to the more open ground, and then to the other part of the arena where there was no rubble on the ground... yet.

((Check: 15 = 4 Force Level + 4 Fitness + 1 Athletics + 1 Force Jump + 5 non-combat action -- for escaping this round.))

"Nyet comrade victory will come when the time is right. Not when you want it to be over." Nebesnogo said before attacking with a near blinding flurry of slashes, cuts and jabs.

He then dove after the retreating form of Trigiel. When he noticed that Trigiel jumps away form him when he got close he focussed on the force and made a quick burst of speed just before the other jedi would jump away to get inside his defences. while he did this he also made sure he gained some more altitude to if necessary give himself some more attack speed later on.

As Nalan was forced against the wall she could see the disadvantage of being pushed against the wall. To avoid any disadvantages she would jump back herself and launch herself from the wall to go over T'sal. ((Check: 9 = 5 Force Level + 3 Fitness + 1 Force Jump -- )) .

As Nalan landed and prepared for T'sal coming in again . Nalan focused on getting her defensive up again. Nalan dodged any direct confrontation and kept moving away from her to regain her footing once more. if possible Nalan wanted to zigzag along the pillars and maybe try to get out of sight completly from T'sal ((Check: 11 = 5 Force Level + 3 Fitness + 3 Stealth -- )). waiting for her chance to strike

Nathan and Ariana

((OOC: Nathan: The move is creative, but I have a problem with it. If Nathan forces Ariana to back into a pillar with aggressive slashes, that would mean Ariana would be between Nathan and the pillar. Thus, if the pillar is cut, and Nathan pushes it, the pillar would not fall in Ariana's direction, but away from her. In order to have it fall towards Ariana, he'd have to pull it, which you can't do by ramming your shoulder into the pillar.

Possibly you meant forcing Ariana to take cover behind a pillar so the pillar would be between yourself and Ariana, but in that case she wouldn't normally move to dodge your attack unless she already knew you were going to slice through the pillar, in which case most of the effect is gone since she'd be moving to dodge the pillar and the trickery of using a slash meant for her to get the pillar to come down would be lost.

Now, I considered if forcing Ariana towards the pillars in and of itself would qualify for an offensive advantage action, but I think the answer would have to be no. I just don't see how Ariana being in the pillar area would offer an offensive advantage to Nathan. Even slashing the pillar isn't really an offensive advantage action, its more of an offensive direct combat action.

So I'm afraid all things considered, I have to say your action is DENIED.

Ariana: Hawk-Bat Swoop applies here since in an earlier turn you flew to the ceiling. Technically the power says "attack" so we will need to discuss if this ability should apply to both defensive and offensive actions and add some clarification, but in its current form it says you can use it for Direct Combat Actions and Terrain (Advantage) Actions, so I'll approve it.

Note that you're no longer at that height since Hawk Bat Swoop requires you to fly down, but you can fly up again if you wish of course ^_^ Either do it during your action in one turn and use Hawk Bat Swoop again in the turn after that, or you can fly up and Hawk Bat Swoop down in a single turn but in that case you need to make a check.

Changing the terrain to be more difficult is an appropriate defensive action, and since Ariana is airborne, I do think making rubble on the ground would apply. I am somewhat in doubt as to whether or not Telekinesis can actually be used as you describe - I think this power too has a lot of confusion and what you're doing is similar to what Nebesnogo is doing but he's got Telekinesis 2.

Carefully considering things, I've decided to pass the action. Even if the Telekinesis 1 is a bit on the weak side for what she's trying to do, Ariana's move is defensive, not offensive and her Energy of 5 means she can put a lot of power behind her Telekinesis. Your action is therefore APPROVED.))

Nathans outer ring attacks kept coming down towards Ariana, but her inner and middle defences remained intact this time as she regained her balance!

Nebesnogo and Trigiel

((OOC: Nebesnogo: I don't think racing after someone who is fleeing rally qualifies you for an offensive advantage action. So I'm afraid that one is DENIED.

I'm not going to detail into whether or not you get an extra bonus on attack over chasing a fleeing opponent who doesn't attack. It makes sense to me, but to prevent me from making a ruling I might regret in a later situation where PC's are fleeing from an NPC opponent, I'm going to leave that matter unsettled and not make a ruling.

At this point, I doubt it matters.

Trigiel: I'm afraid that I can't allow a non-combat action to have the effect of negating Nebesnogo's attack. I might interpret the move as removing an advantage from Nebesnogo, but really that wouldn't have much effect either, so instead I'm just going to say the action is DENIED.

As with Nebesnogo, at this point it doesn't really matter as the mudry has won this fight clearly. 9/12/10 vs 5/8/5 just doesn't stand a chance.))

Nebesnogo chased quickly after Trigiel, and with a slam of the saber claimed victory over his opponent.

((OOC: Nebesnogo wins!))

T'sal and Nalan

((OOC: T'sal: Forcing an opponent into a wall from the pillar area I can see working so the action is valid. She'd have to outmanoeuvre her opponent though to keep attacking from all sides and force the other woman into the wall. I'm counting Force Level and Strength or Fitness here (since they are the same for T'sal, I don't have to go through the trouble of deciding which is more appropriate). None of T'sals skills are really applicable and I don't think Force Jump is either since this is close quarter fighting rather than an open or raised area. T'sal cannot claim advantage from knowing Suus Mahna, since it doesn't apply to the situation (manoeuvering and martial arts are two different things.

That brings a total score of 8. Looking at Nalan's scores in this area, she really does not have any manoeuvrability either. However, the main burden here is on T'sal since she'd doing something difficult, trying to force her opponent to do what she wants, as opposed to merely defending herself or trying to gain a short term Direct Combat Action type advantage. So I just don't think the 8 here is enough for that. Unfortunately that means the action FAILED.

My tip for T'sal would be to try and gain advantage in a different way. If she can bring her Intuition and Reason into play, she might be able to gain the upper hand - you invested your points there, so use that ^_^

Final note: Taking the opportunity to check, you also made a small mistake reversing the styles listed for your attack and defence. Last round T'sal defended with Shii-Cho and now she thus attacks with it (and indeed her scores are correct for Shii-Cho, but you list offensive as being with Suus Mahna). Likewise your defensive scores are correct for Suus Mahna (but list Shii-Cho). I think this is just an accidental reversal since everything score-wise is correct ^_^

Nalan: You can take multiple checks in a turn if you wish, but please avoid listing any checks such as the jump as an action in the OOC details as it makes it appear as if you are claiming two actions (one removing the offensive advantage action just taken and one claiming a defensive advantage action for the pillars). As you already know, that's not allowed.

In this case, I'm approving the jump not because you can avoid an opponent from gaining an advantage action in that way, but because T'sal is unable to outmanoeuvre you (her failed check) and the jump description is as good as any for why it failed. Remember, the burden to prove the action is successful is on the party taking the action - you don't need to post to prevent her from succeeding, her check already decides the result of the act.

If you feel a need to add ooc comment to a check, there's a field for that in the format (between [notes] and [/check]), so you can use that instead ^_^

As for your defensive manoeuvre. Hiding between the pillars is well established as a valid course of action to gain a defensive bonus and in fact I stated that it was possible to go for this again. So the action is definitely valid. Using stealth to hide makes sense to me, and though I don't think you'd be able to get completely out of sight of T'sal, who is after all very aggressively following you, I do think with an 11 Nalan can outrun T'sal to get into a position where she can take advantage of the pillar terrain.

For this reason, your action is APPROVED.

Now, that all said, I'm confused about your listed offensive and defensive scores. I don't normally check this but I got confused when I noticed that despite being off balance and not changing your style or saber, you weren't put off balance this round, so I investigated further.

Nalans action last turn was denied, and T'sal has not removed any bonuses from you that round or this one. This turn you're using a defensive advantage action but that does not come into play until next turn.

You also did not switch sabers or combat styles. All that should have changed in your stats is the fact you are now off balance. But that's not the case, nor is there any debate in the Lightsaber OOC thread regarding this.

Looking at the data, you list:

Offensively you list:

Previous turn: 9 / 8 / 8 (with offensive advantage action)
This turn: 7 / 7 / 8

Defensively you list:

Previous Turn: 8 / 9 / 7
This turn: 7 / 6 / 7

Looking at your stats for Shii Cho with regular sabers, 9 / 8 / 8 (with offensive advantage action) and 8 / 9 / 7 (no other situational modifiers) is correct, so last round your scores were perfectly accurate.

Which makes me confused as to how you got at 7 / 7 / 8 and 7 / 6 / 7 this round. As far as I can tell this should be 8 / 7 / 7 and 7 / 8 / 6, which is identical to last round except for the -1 off balance penalty.

Turning one blade off (something you didn't do in your post) would not change your defensive score nor would it affect your offensive score until next round and switching to Ataru from Shii-Cho (also not listed as such) would not get you at the listed scores either.

Because I can't see how the listed stats could be correct, I think you probably made an honest mistake calculating your stats. If I missed something and your stats are indeed correct, please correct me in the Lightsaber Championships OOC thread, and I will look for a solution, but for now I'm going to go ahead and use a score of 8 / 7 / 7 offensively and 7 / 8 / 6 defensively, which as far as I can tell is the score you should have.

Please do be sure to double check your numbers in the future!))

T'sal chased after Nalan, but the Twi'lek woman was too quick for her for the moment, giving her the run-around between the pillars. Even so, T'sal continued to hold the advantage and keep the fleeing Nalan off balance. The Twi'lek woman had to work very hard to keep herself from being taken out. Would she be able to keep that up as T'sal slowly closed the gap?

((OOC: Nalan is off balance. Don't forget to include that in your stats next turn!))

T’sals attempt to corner Nalan did not work and Nalan has taken the opportunity to get away. Now she has lost her advantage and had to start all over again. As Nalan seems to be quite good is hiding, it will be hard to get her out. T’sal does not have great physical strength to force her out so she has to try a different route. T’sal has a good memory and intuition so it is time to make use of that. She has observed Nalan now for quite some time and getting to know her moves and rhythm. It is time for T’sal to go systematically forwards and tries to limit Nalan attacks opportunities by moving near the pillars. This way T’sal can counter Nalan attacks with her quick wits and draw her out off her hiding place as she has to come out to make a solid hit.

((Check: 10 = 5 Force Level + 5 Intuition -- Limit opponent options and moves ( as to draw her out)))

The barrier Ariana put up was a problem.

Nathan knew there was no easy way around it.

"Well if you can't go around an obstacle..."

He took a few steps away from the barrier. Then, using the Force, he shot forward. ((Check: 11 = 4 Force Level + 4 Fitness + 2 Athletics + 1 Force Speed -- charging at the barrier))

He turned his shoulder forward and braced himself. He hit the barrier like a freight train. ((Check: 11 = 4 Force Level + 5 Strength + 2 Athletics -- his momentum when he hits the barrier, breaking through it))

Ariana maneuvres to the area near the collapsed pillar and aggressively slashes back at Nathan. While lashing out she hits as many pillars as possible. She does this by tagging them on the rebound of every slash. She did not try to collapse the pillars, only weaken them.

When Nathan would use one of the pillars for cover again she would lash out at the pillar using her full strength on another part of the pillar. After damaging the pillar on two spots she pushes it away with the force. After clearing the space she sweeps once more at Nathan before returning to the middle of the arena where she would take the high ground again.

Nathan and Ariana

((OOC: Nathan: You smash through a stone barrier. I did not see that coming o_O

Looking at the image of the pillars, it seems to me like that would be difficult. I was in doubt somewhat as to whether or not Ariana smashed the pillar to use the blow of this to create a barrier or whether the pillar was put in between them like a wall. Either way, the pillar was damaged before the bashing through.

Your strength definitely helped you here, but I think I approve of the manoeuvre and the check is high enough. Your action is APPROVED.

Ariana: You destroying the cover seems a reasonable excuse to deny someone their advantage from having cover ^_^ Telekinesis 1 is not allowed to be used in an attack, but destroying cover to remove a defensive advantage cannot really be considdered an attack. With Ariana's energy level, she can certainly rip an already weakened pillar apart. Your action is APPROVED.))

With rocks flying left and right, the two Jedi kept their match up very even, continuing their mutual dance with one filling up the space left by the other allowing the other to fill up the space left by the one in a seemingly eternal dance of sabers... and destruction.

Finally however, a bell was rung, announcing the end of the battle.

Master Screetor stepped into the arena, stepping up in between of the two warriors.

"Ladies and Gentlemen. In a very close decision by Jury, Padawan Nathan Miodrass Asillion has been declared the winner in this match!"

And thus, the round was ended.

((OOC: Ariana spent round 4 off balance, regaining her balance immidiately after. Nathan has not been off balance in the battle. For this reason, Nathan is declared the winner of the battle. I want to add this was a close fight between very evenly matched opponents.))

T'sal and Nalan

((OOC: T'sal: Your manoeuvre is somewhat vague. However, I think you posted a very relevant argument: T'sal has been observing and analysing Nalans moves now for quite some time. This is indeed something that can be used, and I think it is reasonable to say that by analysing their attack pattern you can predict where they are going to hide next and use that information to remove their advantage. This is how people win rock paper scissors. Your action is APPROVED.

Nalan: Without a post, I have nothing to approve, so no action.))

T'sal carefully adapted her strategy to compensate for Nalan's hiding manoeuvres, she carefully began to force the woman into a corner once more.

However, before she could finish, a bell was rung, announcing the end of the battle.

Master Screetor stepped into the arena, stepping up in between of the two warriors.

"Ladies and Gentlemen. In a decision by Jury, Padawan T'sal has been declared the winner in this match!"

Soon, the third and final round of the Lightsaber Championship was about to begin.

The new arena was about the size of the first, leaving more room to manoeuvre, but it also featured a lot more options. The ceiling here was some seven meters high, giving room for fliers to make some distance from the floor, though jumping jedi could probably reach that high. In various places, pillars were set up and even a full scale generator was present in the central area, easily big enough to hide or take cover behind.

Around the outside of the arena was a ring seperating the outer area into two floors which both opened up towards the central area. The area below was filled with all sorts of machines and metal crates, some of which looked like they could be used to toss around with the force. The upper area was completely empty of boxes, but allowed not just a convenient way to circle the arena, but a perfect place of high ground from which to jump onto unsuspecting foes.

The most prominent feature however was a swimming pool which rose up a meter and a bit above the ground and went at least six meters deep, the water reflecting the bad lighting in the room to give it a magical appearance in a sort of steam punky futuristic way.

The match schedule was announced by Jedi Master Screetor:
  • Ajava vs Nebesnogo
  • Ariana vs Nalan
  • Nathan vs Shaedys
  • T'sal vs Trigiel
((OOC: I've decided not to apply any changes to the rules for this round, so all rules for the earlier match apply.

For this round, round 0, please pick a style which will be used as your offensive style next round. The posting deadline is Friday, 01 February 2013 23:59 CET.

Posting Format
Please use the following format for stats at the end of your posts:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1040

List of rules
For your convenience, here is a list of rules from last time:
  • Saber switching is a style change and can be done during a style change.
  • You can have at most 2 blades with you
  • You may use Telekinesis, Force Push, etc. as a Direct Combat Action. You use Force Level + Energy + Relevant Force Power Level as your check.
  • Telekinesis 2 can allow non-weapon objects (stones, etc) to be used as an attack. It is an attack on three rings, but does not gain a bonusses from lightsabers.
  • DCA's now give a +2 on one ring. You cannot split the bonus.
  • Terrain actions are now Advantage Actions. They always give a +1 bonus, never +2.
  • You can have at most three advantages in this way. Please list your advantages each round.
  • You can remove an opponents advantage through an advantage action.
  • If you post an offensive DCA, you need to either post first or be reasonably on time. For our purposes that means it must be in by Wednesday.
  • Please use the +0/+0/+2 format
  • Please don't just add a check but explain in OOC what the check is for.
  • Please always post your TOTAL scores at the end of your post.
  • Please include in OOC the style you are using, even if you did not switch. If you do, please list the offensive and defensive styles separately. Same for sabers

In this round, you may attack, but all attacks (but not defences!) suffer a -2 penalty on all stats.

For this tournament round I will pay special attention to conditional actions and action amounts. If you post you do A but if that fails, you do B or if you post most actions than allowed, I will declare the action invalid and fail it.

All attacks are at -2 this round. There are no other modifiers in play.

Your post should be in by Friday the 8th, 23:59 CET

PS: lightsabers are not waterproof by default, unless your Jedi is aquatic. In some cases, one Jedi has a waterproof lightsaber and the other does not. In such a case, that Jedi might allow the opponent the OOC chance to retcon their saber as waterproof retroactively, which would be a kind gesture but but this is not required. Regardless, if neither player has a waterproof saber, neither player can make them waterproof for this battle.))

Ariana spreads her wings and jumps into the air. While exchanging blows with Nalan she quickly flies around and over the swimming pool, forcing her to either jump over the swimming pool or balance herself on the edge of the swimming pool.

When Nalan tries to jump on to her Ariana lashes out trying to knock her back to the ground, into the swimming pool if at all possible.

((Combat, round 1: Taking offensive Advantage action. ((Check: 9 = 4 Force Level + 4 Strength + 1 Force Speed -- Flying around the swimming pool, taking high ground, keeping Nalan below her by knocking her back.))

Attack: 7 (:outer-attack) / 5 (:middle-attack) / 7 (:inner-attack) - Ataru+Regular and dagger
Defence: 5 (:outer-defence) / 5 (:middle-defence) / 7 (:inner-defence) - Ataru+Regular and dagger
  • - 2 penalty first round.

Wary of the daryan's telekinetic prowess, Ajava decided that it would be best to steer clear of the pool and the boxes. Instead she would manoeuvre towards the generator, and hop onto it -- it seemed to be to big to be easily manipulated by telekinesis, and it offers a nice stop on the way to the second ring.

Swishing past Nebesnogo she feints an attack with her dagger. As he brings up his lightsaber for a block she goes into a front aerial flip, lashing out with her regular blade to perform a Sun Djem. Her feet barely touch the ground as she goes into a barani flip, a somersault with a 180-degree twist, and lands onto the generator.

((Combat, round 1: Sun Djem & Offensive DCA +0/+2/+0 ((Check: 13 = 6 Force Level + 4 Fitness + 2 Acrobatics + 1 Force Speed -- feint followed by unexpected acrobatic attack))

Attack: 7 (:outer-attack) / 9 (:middle-attack) / 7 (:inner-attack) - Shii-Cho + dual-wield regular+dagger blade (regular hilts)
Defence: 10 (:outer-defence) / 11 (:middle-defence) / 9 (:inner-defence) - Shii-Cho + dual-wield regular+dagger blade (regular hilts)
  • First round: -2 on attacks
))

((OOC: EDIT: noted that it is an offensive DCA))

This arena looked like to have a lot of options from the beginning, but as soon Trigiel opened the fight, he already realised that getting advantage here would be really hard, and required a lot of creativity. Good, that should give him a head start over T'sal.

T'sal was a mind oriented jedi, so as long Trigiel used his manoeuvrability, he should be able to stay in the lead.

Trigiel did a few rapid attacks towards T'sal, and as soon she counter attacked, he jumped on top of one of the generator. He deflected her next attack, jumped towards the weird looking other generator next to the swimming pool. In air he did a slice towards the Hiocan child. Every time she attacked, Trigiel moved towards another thing in the arena, and there were a lot of them. Keeping the high ground but staid unpredictable. He was happy that he only used one saber for now. This kept his other arm free to maintain his balance.

((Combat, round 1: Take an offensive advantage action. ((Check: 10 = 4 Force Level + 4 Fitness + 1 Athletics + 1 Force Jump -- for jumping around and maintain footing on the different elements in the arena.))

Attack: 4 (:outer-attack) / 7 (:middle-attack) / 6 (:inner-attack) - Shii-cho+Lightsaber ataru+short blade (tonfa handle)
Defence: 5 (:outer-defence) / 7 (:middle-defence) / 5 (:inner-defence) - Shii-cho+Lightsaber ataru+short blade (tonfa handle)
