The Jedi council has asked for a small group of Jedi to assist with a matter of importance. Little details were given on the mission itself. The notice stated that the applicants were expected to be able to think on their feet and "must be comfortable handling both lightsaber and conventional weaponry."

Applicants were informed to report to the meditation chambers in the top of the temple to apply.

((OOC: Preferred posting frequency 2/week; the reward for this mission will be 1-2 (:xp) depending on coolness of moves. This mission has space for up to 3 players, if there are more applicants than slots, we will resolve things OOCly.

Potential players, note this mission will revolve around multiple fast-paced combat stituations! This mission is about doing battle, and witty one-liners. There shall be little room for lengthy investigations, and you will be given a clear-cut objective.))

The word 'lightsaber' was almost enough for Trigiel to immediately react, he had a good feeling about this mission. Like the force saying: 'you need to kick ass and meditate, and you're done meditating.'

So very soon, Trigiel was the first to arrive.

((OOC: Although I am already in multiple missions, I would very much like to join this one, since I just know this will be my type of mission :).))

With Nathan being a marine this mission was probably going to be a trip down memory lane.

And while he had grown to like his lightsaber, he often missed using his combat rifle. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to take her out for a spin.

((OOC: With 3 slots and 3 applicants, the mission is a go!))

As Trigiel walks into the room, Jedi Master Qun Treen was sitting on a pillow, staring out of the window over Unity City. As the other Jedi announced their presence the mostly empty meditation chambers echoed a little, prompting the Jedi Master to hold up a hand. He did not look at the Jedi assembled behind him, but spoke softly.

"This far above the hustle of the city, one can hear the heartbeats of those nearby.", he remained silent for a moment, "At least, from those that still have heartbeats. For those that listen, after a while, they come to recognize the elegance to the sound. Each species, each individual has their own rhythm. Each rhytm betraying emotions. Trepidation, tension, and even the calm before a storm."

The master remained silent for roughly half a minute. He stands up.

Image
"The Jedi council has a mission for you."

He points to a black case that neatly blends in with the shadows of the room. The case is roughly 1.1m long, 0.65m wide and 0.4m high.

"Travel to sector 4 -5 to deliver this case to Fjihc'Simab. The rendezvous that was agreed upon is a small island on Letnam Shore, a moon in orbit around Letnam. You will have to travel there in a civilian vessel, due to the nearby Mandalorian presence.

For reasons I can not fully explain to you, the council expects that several parties will try to get to the case before it has been handed over. It is imperative that Fjihc'Simab receives the case undamaged and unopened. The case can stand some damage, and has been tested to withstand a thermal grenade explosion. If it is damaged for any reason, do not try to open it, or place the contents in another case. Do not worry about scratches, the case is there only to protect what is inside it.

Keep in mind that Letnam Shore has only a Type II atmosphere, and that other parties will most likely not be sending large armies, but specialised operatives as well. You should discuss the necessary qualities of the ship you wish to take and any conventional armaments you wish to take with quartermaster Nishra, she will be able to help you select the best equipment."

He was silent for a moment.

"In earlier times, the figure of speech 'in a heartbeat' was used to indicate something that happens almost immediately. I know that it makes little sense for some of you, but do try to listen to the rhytm of your heart. Your situation may change in a heartbeat, and the safety of your peers may depend on those changes."

The master sat down again, clearly not intending to answer any questions.

The case, as the Jedi soon discovered, is really very heavy. Weighing in at around 140kg, the insides of the case hummed softly, as if some active machinery was inside. Being Jedi, the trio found that any two of them together can lift the case and move with a brisk walk, but alone each of them would have to drag it over the ground slowly. As the case had two handles, carrying it with three appears to be more of a hinder than help.

((OOC: As for posting frequency: I'm aiming for the following ST posts: thursday-evening post, sunday-evening post. This places the shorter period in the weekend, with the longer period over the work days. During combats this will mean two rounds per week, which should help to keep down the amount of slowdown due to combat.))

((OOC: This post can be ignored. I just keep it here to keep the comments and discussion logical. I ooced it so it will be collapsed :)

Trigiel's first thought was to link his heartbeat monitoring system to his optic sensor input, to have a visualisation of his heartbeat as a HUD, but realised that this was not what master Qun Treen meant, so he didn't do it.

"Let's see, I think we need to be awesome, so let's bring out the big toys," he said tot the others once they were preparing for the mission, "I say we need a ship with a side hatched so we can clear the area if needed while doing a fly-by. Some heavy weapons against mechanized specialised infantry. Grenades should be useful as well, multiple kind of blasters for all kinds of combat situations, and fun, have I already said we need to pack some fun?

Space combat is surely not out of the question as well.

For transport, I nominate the modified Greg-Zaal hyperspace shuttle with 2 rotary blaster canons, 2 missile tubes, manual harpoon gun, several hatchets and enough room to fly in style. Also, nobody is ever going to think that ship is a military vessel."

Trigiel also made sure his life support and body systems were up to speed with the atmospheric situations on Letnam Shore.

Depending to what the others wanted, Trigiel went to Quartermaster Nishra with his list of equipment he thought was fitting for the mission.

"Right. Island, bad atmosphere, operatives that need to be stopped. I will arrange a transport harness for the case. It is a waste of hands if we need two of us to carry it. I will bring my spacesuit and some swimming gear. I will do a quick checkup on Fjihc'Simab. It would be nice to know how to recognize him."

Ariana goes to Quartermaster Nishra to fetch her equipment and the transport harness for the case. She asks for a transport harness, her weapons, swimming gear and space suit. She also asks Nishra if she knew Fjihc'Simab and could describe him. If this is not the case she goes to the library to look him up under known contacts of the Jedi.

((OOC: For the group:
  • Transport harness for the case. When the case is floating it can be easily pushed by one person.

Equipment for Ariana:
  • Dagger blade and regular blade lightsabers with short handles

((OOC: I seem to have need of the cluebat: "You should discuss the necessary qualities of the ship you wish to take and any conventional armaments you wish to take with quartermaster Nishra, she will be able to help you select the best equipment."

Meaning: go talk to quartermaster Nishra, so I can actually give a meaningful RP reply instead of a dry list of what you're not allowed to take (or what you should be taking instead). If you only say 'this is the list' she will reply in kind ^_^

Also, it is easier to interrupt or make cool new things happen if posts are in the present tense. For example "Ariana goes to quartermaster Nishra..." is easier to interrupt than "Ariana went to quartermaster Nishra...", in the second example the visiting of the quartermaster has, apparently, already happened.))

Nathan picked up one side of the case, seeing as no one else had bothered to take it. He started dragging it along as he headed for quartermaster Nishra.

Once he arrived there he put down the case.

"Ma'am, I was told by Master Qun Treen to report to you to discuss equipment I need to bring to deliver this case." Nathan gestured to the case. "I was hoping this would be a good opportunity to use my combat rifle, the M392E Designated Marksman Rifle, in addition to my usual equipment. Could you advise me of any other equipment I'm going to need? I was thinking a few grenades, spare energy clips for my rifle and my side arm. A transport harness for the case would probably also be a good idea. Should I bring any survival gear?"

((OOC: The M392E is the DMR from Halo: Reach only in blaster form. For your convenience a link with specs. Again its a blaster version of the gun.

My usual equipment:
Built in:
- Enhanced Sight (Infra red, Ultra violet, Night vision and optical zoom)
- Wireless links (communication (no vocals required), wireless networks (for computers))
- Finger cam (small camera in the tip of his index finger, mainly used for looking around corners or thrue small cracks)
- Radiation detector (detects Alfa-, Beta-, Gamma-, and neutron-radiation)

Carrying:
- Long hilted, long lightsaber
- Three combat knives (mat black, titanium, balanced for throwing, one in his right boot, one horizontal on the back of his belt and one upside-down on the left of his chest)
- Blaster pistol (Standard issue ACA Marine Officers Side-arm)
- Two three meter long shoelaces

This is not my final equipment list I would like to wait for quartermaster Nishra's reply.))

Trigiel helped bringing in the Case to Quartermaster Nishra.

"Master, we also need a ship. And master Qun Treen warned us that other parties would be after us, so I was thinking to put some of our armaments to some good use. Given the area we are travelling in, I was thinking about the modified Greg-Zaal hyperspace shuttle. It's civilian type transport ship, but with some firepower should prove to be useful. I was thinking to bring a rotary blaster, a rocket launcher, a flame thrower, some blasters and side arms and a sniper rifle, so we are prepared for every situation."

Aside this, Trigiel also is interested in the details about the planet, but this could wait after they were done with Nishra.

Quartermaster Nishra (mask of Storyteller (Brend))

Quartermaster Nishra was easily found by the Jedi, as she was usually available near the supply rooms and armoury.

Ariana

Ariana, arriving first, has to wait a bit before she gets to talk to the jedi master, as she is telling two padawan how to configure a sensor deployment droid. After they get the hang of it, she sends them of to their mission, configured droid happily rolling after them.

"Ariana", Nishra greeted her with a smile, "I haven't seen you for a while now." The master makes some smalltalk as she walks through several of the supply rooms and the armoury, handing piece after piece of equipment to Ariana. "Well, that covers the basics, I think. I'll have the harness brought to the ship."

"Fjihc'Simab... Oh! Your going to Letnam Shore, aren't you. Then you really need to bring a breathing mask, the A99 only gives you two hours of air. You should know that by now, knight." She rumbles behind her counter, and hands Ariana a pack that can be attached to her belt, attached to the pack is a supple tube with a large mask. "Wear this one. I had it custom-made for jedi with larger lung capacities. Or, you could wear your space suit the whole stay, but I advice against that since Letnam Shore atmosphere isn't the friendliest to fresh air seals -- it probably won't remain airtight for more than a few hours."

"I know of Fjihc'Simab, but I have never met the man. You'll probably recognize him when you see him."

A quick visit to the library got her little more: <entry removed by order of the Council>

((OOC: Your equipment is approved!

You may want to add 'breathing mask' to your equipment list.))

Nathan

Nathan and Trigiel arrive at the supply room while Nishra is unloading a container of medical kits. As she finishes the kits, she walks up to the two padawan.

"Padawan, don't ma'am me, it makes me feel old.", Nishra smiles as she says it. "Sounds like you already made up your mind about the rifle. Guessing that you're heading out for Letnam Shore, I suggest you replace the standard scope with a modified S44-X scope. It is more resistant to the atmosphere over there, and give you a nice range finder in the bargain."

"You seem capable enough with the weaponry, so I'll add two thermal grenades to the pack. As for the clips, the standard pack should be enough ammunition, I think. I'll add another two clips just to be sure, they'll fit both your side arm and the DMR, but the DMR will drain them very quickly. But try to bring them back, we can easily recharge them. If you can do so safely, though. No use getting shot over an empty clip."

"You'll have a transport harness waiting at the ship, though don't expect any miracles from it. It'll do the lifting, but someone still needs to push the case. Survival gear... I propose you take a sturdy vessel, and load some supplies. You won't need any breathing mask, since you'll be able to stand the atmosphere. Do worry about prolonged exposure though, especially with visual sensors. The atmosphere has a tendency to dull even the cleanest surfaces. Takes a few days for it to do so though."

((OOC: Your equipment is approved! You don't have to repeat yourself to make sure I read it, I read most posts twice already :D

You're free to pick up any of the gear Nishra advised, or leave it out as you wish. Do not worry about ammunition, I will be applying the bottomless magazine trope. Of course, reloading when dramatically appropriate or to support a cool one-liner is must.))

Trigiel

Image
After Nathan explains what he wants, and Nishra nods and gives some advice, it is Trigiel's turn.

Nishra burst out in laughter. "A Greg-Zaal? 'some firepower'? That's basically a military vessel painted civilian. You're going to stick out like a sore thumb, and will have a target on your hull the moment you enter orbit. I can arrange for one, but I strongly advice you to take a less impressive ship. I agree that you need some armaments, so how about the Hornet type 2? It features a good ship-to-ship cannon, while clearly not aggressive."

"Trigiel, I know you like playing with guns. But this is serious.", she became a significantly more serious after laughing about the greg-zaal. "Jedi are not soldiers, and you should keep in mind that if the weapon won't pose a problem for you, it might not pose a problem for your opponent either. Do not take this lightly."

"That being said. A flame-thrower is not going to happen. Such as weapon is not only primitive, but you will literally be strapping two bombs to yourself in an effort to heighten the general temperature enough for the other to give up... While they are shooting at you and your bombs.

How about you take your lightsaber, a blaster, a side arm, and a rocket launcher for when they bring armour? Your colleague already brings a sniper rifle. I suggest that each of you take a responsibility, instead of trying to do everything.

Besides, how are you going to carry all those weapons? If you leave them in the ship you can't use them because they're in the ship. If you take them with you you can't use them because your hands are full carrying all the other weapons. Pick one, and let someone else handle the other threats."

Afterwards, a trip to the library got Trigiel a little extra information on Letnam Shore. The moon featured a corrosive atmosphere, and gravity was a little lighter than normal. Not much, but just enough to have some very large flying fish capable of jumping out of the ocean and over smaller islands. There was also some information on an old battle being fought there long ago, nothing really concrete, more historical notes.

((OOC: Your equipment is approved, if you...

...pick the ship type based on what interests the group most. I would prefer not doing a space-battle or ship-vs-ship as we have done a few of them already during the war, and they eat into the ground-combat posting time.

...Take only a single heavy weapon (keep in mind the remark from Qun Treen about "other parties will most likely not be sending large armies, but specialised operatives" :P)))

Everyone

With their equipment sorted out, and the case harnessed in a sturdy repulsor harness, the three jedi were almost ready to leave for Letnam Shore. There was only one more choice to make.

A small military maintenance crew wearing Union Defence Fleet uniforms was on standby near the ship. "Master Qun Treen told us to adjust your ship's entry engines for you. He told us to tell you he had a droid program the landing coordinates, droid says it's on the beach. But you'll have to tell us if you want a hard descent or slow drop.

The hard descent will get you close to your landing zone at high speed, allowing immediate exit to the ground with minimum time lost. It gets a bit hairy in the upper atmosphere, but the speed'll protect you against rockets and such. No time to pick and choose though, you'll be dropped on the beach faster than a speeder.

The slow drop will allow you to enter into a hover at roughly 50 meters, gets you to see the sights and all, but you'll be vulnerable to rocket fire while dropping. You could adjust your landing zone though, after the hover, could safe you a trip past blaster fire central."

((OOC: Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves if there's things you want to do still, or things you want to discuss. If you're done here, say so with your next post. I will move the mission on to Letnam Shore's. If no choice is made for hard descent/slow drop, I will default to hard descent.

For my sanity (of quickly finding the correct list), please post your complete and final equipment list in your next post.))

Nathan still didn't understand why a lot of women didn't like being called ma'am. To him it is a polite term to refer to a female superior or civilian, it was expected of him as a marine.

"Aye ma...ster." Nathan corrected himself. "I'll switch the scope and make an appointment with my medical engineer for after I return. She can fix my eyes then. Thank you."

Nathan bowed to Quartermaster Nishra, then took the equipment she recommended. He dragged the case with him to the ship.

Once at the ship Nathan listened to the soldier as he strapped the case to the transport harness.

"I suggest a hard landing, come out guns blazing. The faster we move the safer we'll be. What do you think?" The last sentence was directed at his fellow jedi.

"But the Hornet is not as cool as the Greg-Zaal." Trigiel said disappointed to Nishra, "but we'll take the Hornet, if that will cause us less troubles.

My idea of the Z-6 and the rocket-launcher was to clear a landing site with it, then we land the ship and go further by foot. But then I will just take the rocket launcher. Mechanised units are the hardest to get rid of. Oh, I totally forgot to ask for a few grenades. Those are not as unstable as flamethrowers and are very effective given the right circumstances. Especially smoke grenades should be useful."

Once Trigiel had made up his mind about what equipment he needed he went to the ship to join the others.

The crew quickly adjusts the ship for hard descent, and the Jedi are on their way.

After a trip involving several hyperspace jumps spread over 30 uneventful days during which the Jedi had to take turns pilotting, the Hornet arrives in the Letnam system. Normally, when coming out of hyperspace one takes a moment to look around and calculate orbit paths. In this case, the ship immediately indicates the descent route and accelerates to full sub-light, speeding towards the moon Letnam Shore.

Image
With a distinctly unsafe descent speed the ship literally falls for the first part of the dive into the atmosphere. Dropping to only a kilometer, the ships thrusters kick in. Not to decelerate, but to create a descent slope over the ocean. Only at the last possible moment did the thrusters kick in to place the ship, with the three Jedi and the curious case inside, neatly on the shore of the island.

Image
During the drop, the three Jedi could see the outline of a massive spaceship sticking out on the horizon. It appears as if it crashed into the ocean long ago. The island itself is best described as "a few rocks with a military base on top". The base clearly has power, as can be seen from the working lights. A battle a long time ago has taken out the bridge into the base, and repairs have not been made.

The Jedi see a shuttle parked on the base's landing pad. As their vessel speeds towards the beach the Jedi spot two groups of five soldiers reacting to their presence. The first group, clearly armed with shoulder-mounted rocket launchers fires two missiles at the Hornet. Due to its high speed, both missiles miss, and the vessel shakes with the impact of the explosions behind it.

The Hornet's engines scream loudly as they thrust beyond their safety capacity to slow down the ship. With a thud, the Hornet crashes into the beach, spitting up sand. Their landing position places the Jedi in a clearly disadvantageous situation on the beach, with three soldiers having opened fire at the windows of the Hornet from a distance, their position much higher on the concrete balcony.

As the back door of the hornet opens with a hiss, the Jedi see a fourth soldier on the balcony aim a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher at the Hornet, immediately followed by the sight of a rocket speeding towards the ship!

Nathan saw his heart's RPM rate climb during their decent.

As the hatch opened and Nathan saw the rocket speed towards them he instinctively reacted.

"I got it!"

Using his telekinesis he changed the rocket's trajectory so it would miss them with as much distance as possible in case it had a proximity fuse.

As it flew off, Nathan grabbed his DMR from his back and took aim at the guy with the rocket launcher.

Knowing that this missile was a serious issue Ariana immediately reacted as well. Without saying anything she reacted the same as Nathan. Since she had not seen Nathan in action with powerful telekinesis she did not want to take any risk here. They required this ship to get home...

Ariana immediately jumped out of the ship , grabbed her regular lightsaber from her belt in a single sweep and tried to push the missile out of its trajectory using the force. If she could not get a grib of the missile the only thing left to do was use circle of shelter to protect her allies and the ship against the missile with her lightsaber.

((OOC: Both Nathan's and Ariana's checks are approved!))

Nathan's quick reaction deflects the missile away from the ship at a ninety-degree angle as Ariana dashes out of the vessel. Outside, she uses the Force to further deflect the missile, turning it back to the balcony in a seemingly well-coordinated effort. The suddenly returning missile forces the soldiers to dive for cover as the missile explodes against the concrete balcony.

As this happens, Trigiel remains standing inside the ship, next to the curious case.

The soldiers quickly recover from the unexpected missile attack, and open fire on the Jedi! Instead of acting like untrained goons, these soldiers take advantage of the large distance between the hornet and the balcony, taking careful aim. The soldiers make use of well-aimed bursts of blaster fire, targetting the one visible target without a melee weapon: Nathan.

Their rocket-launcher wielding colleague rolls out of cover to launch a second missile, exposing himself to enemy fire as he squeezes the trigger and launches the second missile at the hornet!

((Combat, round 1: Attack Nathan, Defensive Advantage (high ground).

((OOC: Note that rockets have an explosion radius. If the hornet is hit, both Trigiel and Nathan will get hit by the explosion -- Ariana moved away in her post.

EDIT: Obviously, the soldiers can not use Ataru+Blasters. Fixed.))

((OOC: Wait what? I was under the impression that round 0 was only for declaring style and weaponry. So no actions would happen in round 0. But I will roll with it.))

Now Ariana and Nathan cleared the missile, and were drawing attention, Trigiel ran outside the ship. Dodging and deflecting the blaster shots aimed at him. For some inexplicable reason, Trigiel felt the urge to shout: "LEROY JENKINGS!!". It was something he heard youngsters shout sometimes, it felt good.

Near the balcony, Trigiel jumped from rock to rock onto the balcony, close enough to start slice and dice the soldiers.

You are right. Normally, round 0 is for declaration of style and armaments. Which is why I specifically noted this exception in my previous post just above the round 0 declaration with an explicit note on this:

Storyteller (Brend) wrote:Next to declaring your combat opening you each get, as a special ruling unique to this situation, to take one non-combat action to move/push a case/deflect the rocket/etc.

Since you already said you'll roll with it, I assume that things are good ^_^

Also, Check your combat ratings please. How can you have Trained Combatant Style defence as high as your Ataru offence?))

Without thinking about it Ariana responded with a shout as well: "CAN'T TOUCH THIS!" Immediately after the words she started a strange dance maneuvre where she nicely deflected all the blaster bolts that were fired at them around the ship. Ariana protected both Nathan and the ship during her dance and casually pushed the incoming missile away from the ship with the force directing it with her free hand. She only pushed it away from them in a very short move and did not bother directing it any further.

Nathan's time as a marine had completely killed his sense of humour.

Staying close to the hornet, he saw Ariana take the second rocket. He took cover behind the hornet.

From behind cover, Nathan sighted the guy with the rocket launcher in his DMR's scope. Then he squeezed the trigger. Since he was the only one still close to the hornet, it was his job to take the case out. Which he would as soon as the enemy stopped shooting at him.

((Check: 10 = 6 Force Level + 4 Vision -- sniping the guy with the rocket launcher))

((Combat, round 1: attack guy with rocket launcher, defensive advantage action (taking cover)

((OOC: Since blasters only attack on one ring I reasoned I only got one ring for offence, could you confirm this for me?))

((OOC: Confirmed. In fact, next time you should list them as having a score of - instead (as seen in the previous ST post) of 0, since 0 is still a score that might overcome someone's -1 ^_^))
